  • Raiders will be strong again...

When Southridge moved from Class 3A to 2A in baseball last summer, I was surprised that the Raiders weren’t placed in the same sectional as Tell City and Perry Central.
After all, the Raiders had always been in the same sectional with the Perry County teams when they were in 2A before.
But placing the Raiders in a different sectional has proved to be an advantage for our local teams.

  • Rockport edges Pate in 11 innings

EVANSVILLE—Gavin Poole had a single and scored two runs as Rockport nipped Evansville Pate 10-9 in 11 innings in American Legion baseball Tuesday.
Reece Davis, a Perry Central high school teammate of Poole’s, also had a single for Rockport.
Poole played second base and Davis was Post 254’s designated hitter.
Tell City senior Ryan Morgan pitched one inning for Rockport, walking three and striking out one.
He gave up two runs - one earned.

  • Three teams in race for first in...

TELL CITY—Heading into the final two days of the season, three of Tell City’s age-11-14 girls softball teams are still in the race for first place in the league.
Team Central, Cash Waggner and Crawford Memorials all still have a chance at the title, though Crawford did hurt its chances with a 13-0 loss to Linne’s Auto & Diesel Repair Monday.
Brinna Parker pitched a two-hitter for Linne’s in that game, striking out six.

JASPER – Tell City swept Jasper 4-3 and 7-6 in a Diamond League doubleheader Thursday.

In game one, Joe Gaynor pitched a complete game. He gave up three runs and earned the victory after Spencer Sandage’s walk-off hit.

“We played pretty well,” Tell City coach Trent Benningfield said. “I played most of my older guys the first game and they did a good job for me.

“Jasper competed really well all night long.”

The IHSAA recently found itself between a rock and a hard place as Southridge’s Class 2A baseball semistate opponent was still being determined after the regional.

The controversy stemmed from Scecina using pitcher Mac Ayres in both its regional games, with a 17-pitch relief appearance preceding his 117-pitch outing against South Vermillion. Scecina rallied to beat South Vermillion 7-6 to win the regional.

  • Team Central takes sole...

TELL CITY—Justice Cash hit a triple and three singles and was the winning pitcher as Team Central beat Crawford Memorials 9-4 Thursday to move into sole possession of first place in Tell City’s age 11-14 girls softball league.

After rainouts Monday and Tuesday, there were four games in the league Wednesday and three Thursday, with some teams playing three times in those two days.

Team Central emerged with a 4-1 season record. Crawford Memorials, Cash Waggner and Pour Haus each have two losses, with Crawford leading that group in wins with four.

  • Commodores' Poole a Legion...

ROCKPORT – There isn’t a lot of free time in Gavin Poole’s life right about now.

He’ll be a senior at Perry Central this fall but before his final year as a Commodore commences, he’ll be getting the most out of each day – literally.
