GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sawyer Guillaume didn’t set a personal record with his pole vaulting last week, but he was good enough to win a national championship.

Sawyer, a Perry Central eighth-grader, cleared 10 feet, 10 inches to win the age-13 title in the AAU Junior Olympic Nationals.

He had cleared 11 feet, 5 3/4 inches in a meet at Henderson, Ky., July 4 and was hoping to better that. But he didn’t have to claim the first-place medal.
