  • LETTER: United Way supports area Girl Scout programs

Girl Scouts of Southwest Indiana would like to thank the United Way of Perry County, its staff and board members and the Perry County community for their continued support of our programs in Perry County.

Each year, nearly 200 Perry County girls participate in troops, camps and Girl Scout events. Perry County is very special to area Girl Scouts because it is home to Camp Koch, a beautiful space loved by girls and adults across the region since 1942.

  • LETTER: United Way a strong partner with Council on Aging

I would like to take this time to thank the United Way of Perry County for its continued support to the Perry County Council on Aging. Our organization was founded March of 1974 and this marks our 40th year of continued service.

Without the support of our local community and the United Way, our services would not be available to the Perry County residents.

Our services of transportation is available to all Perry County residents, regardless of age or disabilities and whether it be for medical or personal needs.

  • LETTER: Find ways to be of service to others this season

Thanksgiving is a time of giving thanks. We express gratitude and love for our families and for blessings. Or, do we just take for granted what we have? You know, a warm house to come home to, food to eat, family and good friends. Are we grateful to live in this country and to have a job, a means to support our family?

Our country is experiencing a very poor economy. Unemployment is up, even though data and statistics may show it is dropping.

  • LETTER: Annexation support evident at Nov. 20 hearing

We would like to thank everyone who showed up in Jasper at the annexation hearing Nov. 20. The turnout was great. It let us know where we stand and how the process works. In my opinion, we are looking good but we can’t sit idly by and forget about the work we have put into this.

It is a long process, but we have to keep motivated. I think the turnout let the city and their attorneys know how organized we are.

  • LETTER: Don’t be afraid to speak up for what you feel is right

Now that the elections are over and the community has chosen our leadership, I would like to share thoughts from an article I read some time ago concerning public involvement and community issues.

The article was titled “5 reasons you should speak up” in which best-selling author Kevin Daum listed reasons citizens should be frank and contribute to public issues. He provided permission to use his article in the News.

I believe our community will benefit by embracing the “bring it up” core value Daum mentions.
