Memorial Day still serves as the official kickoff to summer, and it certainly felt like summer over the weekend. What seemed to be a late spring with late bouts of snow showers has finally given way to full-blown hot weather.

I like all animals. I like that I live in the country and get to see all kinds of creatures. But when they get my blueberries before me or when they open the birdseed can in the middle of the night or when they dig up flower pots or nibble off the tops of perennials or ... well, you surly understand.

  • Solo is an unnecessary but fun and exciting Star Wars movie

    Eric Harris

    Film Critic

“Star Wars” has surprised me quite a bit in the last few years, in both good and bad ways. It’s been bad because I don’t care much for the two new main movies: “The Force Awakens” and “The Last Jedi.”

Even after all these years of covering commencements, the strains of “Pomp and Circumstance” inspire me with optimism. After all, I have high hopes for this year’s group of newly minted graduates from Perry County’s three high schools, not to mention all of the college grads.

  • Save money this summer

    Heather Powell

I’m a big reader. I love to read fiction, non-fiction, poetry and everything in between. I find reading helps relax me, entertain me and, most importantly, educate me.

Late last year I read “The Total Money Makeover” by Dave Ramsey and haven’t stopped thinking about it. His views on getting out of debt and building a secure financial future have really struck a cord with me.

Memorial Day is approaching and with it, high-school graduations, summer vacations and even a well-known auto race.

But this Memorial Day, we hope Perry Countians will devote some of the coming week and holiday weekend to honoring. Doing so will respect the heroism and selfless service shown by the men and women who gave their lives in service to our land.

  • 51 isn’t that bad after all

I turn 51 Wednesday, not exactly an old age I guess, but I’m starting to finally feel my age. That, perhaps, is what really hurts. I mean literally, it hurts.

I ran across a collection of senior photos a few weeks ago taken by the late Art Gerber in 1984. Wow, that was 34 years ago. I had a full head of blond hair, only one chin and a whole lot more muscle than I do today. The column photo above is me in 1984.

  • Building a healthier state

    TAMI SILVERMAN

    GUEST COLUMNIST

As parents, caring adults and community leaders, we must create the conditions for healthy kids to thrive. This means recognizing and addressing the dangers children face when they live in unhealthy environments, reducing health-harming behaviors like smoking and substance use by children and around children, and building communities that make it easier for kids and families to make healthy choices about food and physical activity.
