  • Avallone wins 50 free in boys PAC

    LYNNVILLE - Zach Avallone won the 50-yard freestyle to lead Tell City to fourth place in the PAC boys swim meet Saturday.

    Southridge won the seven-team meet with 289 points. Tell City scored 225.

    Avallone, a senior in just his second year on the swim team, swam the 50 free in 23.77 seconds.

    "He broke 24 seconds for the first time," noted Tell City Coach Mike Page.

    Avallone, Nick Bower, Greg Clayton and Isaac Schaefer placed second in the 200 free relay in 3:48.07.

    Tell City freshman Justin Peter took second in the 100 backstroke in 1:04.14.

  • Hauenstein wins 500 freestyle as Tell City girls place 2nd in PAC

    LYNNVILLE - Erika Hauenstein won the 500-yard freestyle and swam on two winning relays to lead Tell City to second place in the PAC girls swim meet Saturday.

    Southridge won the eight-team meet with 304 points. Tell City scored 260.

    Hauenstein, a freshman, won the 500 free in 5:48.16. "I think she dropped about six seconds (from her previous best time)," said Tell City Coach Mike Page.

    She teamed with Chelsea Malone, Katie Clemens and Jessica Wagner to win the 200 free relay in 1:48.07.

  • Kast, Froehlich champions as Tell City 3rd in PAC

    LINCOLN CITY - Andy Kast and Dylan Froehlich won their weight classes to lead Tell City to third place in the nine-team PAC wrestling tourney Saturday.

    Gibson Southern won with 188.5 points. Tell City scored 151.

    Kast, who missed the first half of the season recovering from a broken arm suffered in a car wreck, beat Jesse Smithers 6-1 in the 125-pound finals.

    Kast pinned Josh Thomas of Forest Park in 1:53 and Kevin Baron of Heritage Hills in 5:45 to reach the finals.

    Froehlich beat Kyle Schneider of Southridge 4-0 to win the 215-pound title.

  • Caudell's hot shooting helps Mitchell beat PC

    LEOPOLD - Austin Caudell made 13 of 15 shots from the field as Mitchell beat Perry Central 68-55 in PLAC boys basketball Saturday.

    "We came out flat in the first and third quarter," said Perry Central Coach Matt Carter.

    He also said the Commodores "were soft underneath tonight. We have to toughen up. We were getting abused in there. They had eight offensive rebounds and got fouled on every one."

    Despite the lack of intensity, the Commodores made a run at Mitchell in the fourth quarter.

  • Marksmen rally in 4th quarter, top Wolfpack

    MARENGO - Tell City rallied late in the fourth quarter to overcome Crawford County 70-65 in boys basketball Saturday.

    The win was the Marksmen's ninth straight, boosting their season record to 12-2.

    Crawford County started the game with a full-court press with every intension of pushing the basketball and having an up tempo game.

    "I wasn't surprised they wanted push the basketball," Tell City Coach John Hayes said. "We were bigger, so they started a smaller, quicker lineup to try to rush us a little. I thought we handled it pretty well. Ryan Zuelly did a nice job.

  • Bulldogs outrun Eagles as Aud scores 40

    LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Tyler Aud scored 40 points as Cannelton beat Portland Christian 97-88 in boys basketball Saturday.

    Aud, a 5-foot-11 junior guard, hit 14 of 19 shots from the field, including 8 of 12 from three-point range, and 4 of 6 free throws.

    His point total was the highest by a Bulldog boy since Jeremy Bennett scored 42 against Washington Catholic Dec. 13, 1997.

  • Jeeps beat PC girls

    LEOPOLD - Northeast Dubois placed four scorers in double figures to beat Perry Central 67-51 in girls basketball Saturday.

    Senior forward Allie Matheis scored 14 points to lead the balanced Jeeps, who are 14-3 and ranked eighth in the state in Class A.

    Alie Schroeder scored 19 points on 8 of 18 field-goal shooting and 3 of 3 free throws for Perry Central. Rachael Rayford added 13 points and Hilarie Hahus scored 10.

    Schroeder grabbed 10 rebounds and Hahus added five. Schroeder and Melissa Hahus each had three assists.

  • Eagles top Cannelton girls

    LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Portland Christian dominated the rebounding and defeated Cannelton 47-43 in girls basketball Saturday.

    The Bulldogs grabbed only 18 rebounds and committed 27 turnovers. They hit 32.1 percent (17 of 53) from the field.

    They got off to a cold start, scoring only one point in the first 5:22 as they fell behind 8-1.

    Still they rallied from a 12-point deficit to close the gap to two points in the final minute.

    Nakaa Myers hit a 15-footer out front and Jaci Garrett hit 1 of 2 free throws to make the score 45-43 with 10.5 seconds left.

  • Tell City girls split two games

    TELL CITY - Tell City hit only 6 of 42 shots from two-point range as it lost to North Posey 57-53 in a battle of PAC girls basketball contenders Saturday.

    The Marksmen shot well from farther out, hitting 9 of 13 from three-point range and 14 of 19 free throws.

    But their lack of inside offense against the tall Vikings hurt.

    The Marksmen led 43-41 after three quarters but "we didn't move the ball very well in the fourth quarter against their 2-2-1 half-court trap," said Tell City Coach John Lyons.
