  • Cannelton school board receives testing update

    CANNELTON – During a meeting of the Cannelton School Board Feb. 16 that lasted about 15 minutes, interim assistant principal for the junior-senior high school Dan Freed said the first round of Indiana Statewide Testing for Educational Progress will begin March 5 and will include three days of general testing with makeup days to follow. The second round will resume in late April.

  • Indiana’s first national park celebrates 50 years

    LINCOLN CITY – Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial, Indiana’s first national park, is celebrating its 50th anniversary throughout 2012.

    “Fifty years ago, the site for Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial was set aside to preserve and protect the legacy of Abraham Lincoln in Indiana, capping a long tradition of commemoration and remembrance within the local community,” said historian and special events coordinator Emily Thompson.

  • Sigler, Taylor join FSA Committee

    ROCKPORT – Judy Sigler and Gordon Taylor were recently elected to  the Spencer-Perry County Farm Service Agency Committee.

    Sigler represents farmers from Jackson, Grass, Hammond and Clay townships in Spencer County, with Taylor elected to represent the farmers of Oil, Clark, Leopold and Union townships in Perry County.

    Each will serve a three-year term.

  • Perry-Spencer Crop Day coming to Fulda March 6

    FULDA – The 2012 Perry-Spencer Crop Day will begin at 6 p.m. March 6 at the Fulda Sportsman Club. Topics include herbicide-resistance issues and ways to prevent and identify resistance problems, as well as bulk storage of pesticides.

    Speakers will include Travis Legleiter, a weed science program specialist from Purdue University; Richard Baylis from Opti-Crop and Purdue extension educators.

    CANNELTON – Cannelton’s board of public works and safety and common council approved in a regular meeting Feb. 13 a contract with Cole Engineering Solutions of Cold Spring, Ky., to certify the city’s flood wall.

  • Cannelton sports great Hafele dies

    CANNELTON – Joe Hafele, the only person to win basketball sectionals for Cannelton as a player and coach, died Monday at age 83.

    A 1946 Cannelton graduate, Hafele led the Bulldogs to a basketball sectional title his senior year.

    He scored a team-high 13 points as the Bulldogs lost to Evansville Central 36-32 in the Evansville regional that year. Central won on two controversial baskets late, one after the ball hit a ceiling support and one after a horn sounded at the scorer’s bench.
