    Teaching through real-world example will be the preaching approach for the sermons from new senior pastor Christian Watkins at the Deer Creek Baptist Church. His approach is to explain and work through the books of the Christian Bible, applying learning within modern context, and using the verses to drive the sermons and center preaching and teaching on the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  • INDIANAPOLIS – Dorothy “Dot” Kessner of Tell City has been awarded the Golden Hoosier Award. Established in 2008, the Golden Hoosier Award acknowledges and recognizes “an unsung hero” among the outstanding seniors for their lifetime of service to their communities.

    Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch, in collaboration with the Indiana Family and Social Service Administration’s Division of Aging, announced that 21 senior citizens will receive the 2018 Golden Hoosier Award.

  • FERDINAND – Nine Sisters of St. Benedict of Ferdinand have celebrated the 50th anniversary of their monastic profession. They were honored on Saturday, June 2, at Monastery Immaculate Conception.

    The jubilarians, Sister Ann Francis Hillenbrand, Sister Brenda Engleman, Sister Kathy Bilskie, Sister Sharon Hollander, Sister Jeanne Ellen Niehaus, Sister Patty Lasher, Sister Laura Marie Schmitt, Sister Mary Lou Dick, and Sister Linda Campbell, entered Monastery Immaculate Conception in 1966 and professed their monastic vows in 1968.

  • Sherry and Gary Sparks of Quincy, Ill., will be celebrating their 35th wedding anniversary at an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 16, at the Triple Oaks Club, 3707 Bonansinga Drive, Quincy. All family and friends are invited to attend.

    Sherry is the daughter of Revilla and the late Robert Hinton of Tell City. Gary is the son of the late Kenneth and  Phyllis Sparks of Quincy. The Sparks are the parents of one daughter, Lisa Marie Sparks, and her special friend, Charles Dean Strieker.

  • Norman and Sandra Borho of Tell City will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on June 15, 2018. They were married at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Tell City on June 15, 1968.

    The couple will enjoy a blessing of their marriage at St. Paul’s at Saturday evening’s Mass followed by an invitation dinner hosted by their children at the Knights of Columbus, where they celebrated their wedding reception.

    Norman and Sandra are the parents of Cathy Rupple (Brad), Theresa Blanchard, Rob Borho (Teri), Shawn Borho (Bethany) and Nathan Borho (Eva).

  • Methodist church yard, bake sales June 8-9

     

    TELL CITY – First United Methodist Church of Tell City will host a church-wide yard and bake sale on Friday, June 8, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday, June 9, from 7 a.m. to noon. The sales will be located at the church on 10th and Mozart streets. Contact Shirley Garner at (812) 836-2847 for more information.

  • Brittney Harth and Matt Carter of Cannelton wish to announce their engagement and approaching wedding.

    The ceremony will be held at the City Hall Gazebo on June 2, 2018, at 2:30 p.m. followed by a reception at the Schergens Center.

    The bride-elect’s parents are Jane (Terry) Schaefer and Dale Harth, all of Tell City. Brittney holds a master’s degree in social work from the University of Southern Indiana and is employed at Perry Central Community Schools.

    The groom-elect’s parents are Mary and Maurice Carter of Cannelton.

  • Derek Keith Culbertson and Cassie Lynn Culbertson of Bristow announce the birth of their twin girls, Adelyn Grace and Brynley Nicole.

    They were delivered at 7:35 a.m. and 7:36 a.m. on April 6, 2018, at Jasper Memorial Hospital. Adelyn weighed 5 pounds 12 ounces and was 19 inches in length. Brynley weighed 5 pounds 11 ounces and was 18 inches in length.

    They have a big brother, Ryker Keith Culbertson.

    Maternal grandparents are Richard and Mary Cassidy of Tell City. Paternal grandparents are Keith and Cindy Culbertson of Bristow.

  • Steve and Judy Houghland of Fulda will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary on Saturday, May 26, 2018, with a Mass of Celebration at St. Boniface Catholic Church at 5 p.m. A reception will follow at the Fulda Sportsman Club. Dinner will be served around 6 p.m. All family and friends are welcome.

    Steve and Judy are the parents of Braden Houghland of Louisville, Ky., and Lydia Houghland of Owensboro, Ky. They also have one grandson, Wayde Allen Barber of Owensboro, Ky.

    The couple was married on May 27, 1978, at St. Meinrad Catholic Church.
