Tell City routs Chargers

PETERSBURG—Tell City ran all over Pike Central for a 48-7 win in Pocket Athletic Conference football Friday.

The Marksmen scored on their first five possessions to build a 35-0 lead with 9:14 left in the third quarter. Their first drive started at their 42-yard line. Elliott Brown carried the ball three times to reach Pike Central’s 5-yard line. Reese Miller ran for a touchdown on the next play. Pike Central started its first possession on its 20-yard line. Using a no-huddle offense, the Chargers ran to the Marksmen’s 1-yard line. Pike Central quarterback Chase Eaton then fumbled the ball into the end zone, where the Marksmen recovered. Tell City Coach Ryan George said, “We knew they were good and their offense came out fired up and moved the ball down the field on their first possession. “We got two turnovers (forced by Tell City’s defense), which were the first two turnovers of the year and were at good times. We need to create more.” After the touchback Tell City had the ball on its own 20-yard line and took just two plays to score again. Brown rushed for 31 yards on first down and Miller ran around the left side for a 49-yard touchdown. Pike Central made a couple of long drives but could not score until late in the game against Tell City’s reserves. Tell City’s defense forced the Chargers to punt on five of its eight possessions. The second Charger turnover was the first play of the fourth quarter with Tell City leading 42-0. Facing a fourh-and-2 play at the Marksmen 2-yard line, Eaton rolled out to his right and threw an interception into the arms of Tell City cornerback Spencer Beard. Tell City rushed for 304 on 32 carries. Brown carried 16 times for 137 yards and two touchdowns. Miller carried 10 times for 107 yards and three touchdowns. Jarrett Hawhee carried once for 53 yards and a touchdown. The Marksmen also got a touchdown through the air on a 10-yard pass from Brennan Malone to Chris Schaefer. Malone completed 3 of 3 passes for 51 yards. Beard kicked six extra points. Pike Central rushed for 168 yards on 48 carries. Pike Central’s quarterback Eaton rushed 16 times for 75 yards, most of them on quarterback sneaks and running behind the fullback. Tell City improved to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the PAC. Pike Central fell to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in the conference. Tell City will host Perry Central Friday at 7 p.m.
