ST. CROIX – A Fort Wayne couple heading home after visiting a family member in Evansville spent an unplanned night in Tell City after a bolt of lightning hit their car on Interstate 64 Oct. 5.

Perry County Sheriff’s Deputy Roger Smith said Paul Lewis, 67, was eastbound near the Crawford County line when lightning hit his Kia Rondo.

The force of the blast immediately caused the car to stall and flattened the front driver’s side tire, perhaps as the electrical charge passed through car into the pavement.

Lewis and his wife, who was a passenger, escaped injury.

Smith said Lewis described seeing a bright white envelop the windshield and heard what he described as a cannon blast.

The driver of a car traveling behind Lewis who saw the lightning strike and pass through the car stopped to check on the occupants. The driver’s wife, a nurse, checked on the couple.

Slow-moving storms dumped 6 or more inches of rain across the county Oct. 5-6, creating flash-flood conditions in some areas.
