TECUMSEH – The Cannelton Bulldogs stood toe-to-toe with Springs Valley, but the Blackhawks managed to slip away with the sectional victory with a final score of 4-1 on Monday.
“We started off the game well and defended well early. We were just unable to make enough plays to come out on top,” said Bulldog baseball coach Mike Garrett.
He added, “We couldn’t take advantage of our scoring opportunities and left to many runners on base, which hurt us in the end.”
Rafe Garrett was the leading pitcher for Cannelton as he threw 57 pitches, striking out 2 batters in five innings played.
Logan Marshall then relieved Garrett from his pitching duties as he threw for the remainder of the game finishing with 26 pitches thrown and 3 strikeouts recorded.
The Bulldogs as a team collected 4 hits at the plate to the Blackhawk’s 6 in the game. David Reed, Travis Throgmorton, Christian Hagan and Bryce Faulkenberg each came away with a hit in the game.
Throgmorton recorded an RBI against Springs Valley.
The game was kept scoreless through the first two innings of the contest.
The Blackhawks scored in the third inning and the Bulldogs matched a run following Throgmorton’s single on a 1-2 count to bring in Bulldog’s first baseman Nolan Aders for the score.
Springs Valley scored a run in the fourth, fifth and sixth inning to get the victory over the Bulldogs.
Blackhawk’s pitcher Carter Crews threw for a complete game and struck out 6 Bulldog batters. The two teams fielded well as they both finished with only a single error in the game.
“These kids have nothing to hang their heads about, we played well all season and battled all year. We came away with some memorable victories this year also. So I’m proud of our guys and how they competed all season,” said coach Garrett.
The Bulldog baseball team finished the season at 11-13.
