    CANNELTON—Improved setting helped Cannelton beat Cloverport 25-18, 25-20, 25-14 in volleyball Tuesday.
    Cannelton Coach Julie Harris said she thought her team played “one of the best games I’ve seen them play in setting up the ball.
    “They also moved really, really well. And as far as communication and talking, it was much better.”
    Chloe Davis had five assists and Nicole Harris and Kelsey Marshall each added two.
    Caressa Sloss made four blocks and three kills and Harris added four kills.

  • Marksmen 6th in state preview...

    TERRE HAUTE—Tell City placed four runners in the top 43 as it finished sixth in the 29-team Terre Haute Savings Bank State Preview boys cross country meet Saturday.
    Though cross country is not a class sport, a separate race was held for schools that are in Classes A-3A in other sports. Eighteen teams ran in that race but Tell City chose to compete with the biggest schools.
    “Pretty well anybody that was any good ran in that race (with the big schools),” said Tell City Coach Brian Beckort.

  • Tell City falls twice in PAC

    TELL CITY—Heritage Hills won every match in straight sets to beat Tell City 5-0 in PAC boys tennis Tuesday.
    Logan Smallwood beat Chandler Lacy 6-1, 6-1 in No. 1 singles in the longest match, which featured several long rallies.
    Cameron Van Winkle defeated Blaze Brumfield 6-0, 6-0 in No. 2 singles and Lucas Zorn beat Lucas Montgomery by the same score in No. 3.
    Gavin Fella and Trae Hirt defeated Jackson Ramsey and Ethan Maffia 6-1, 6-1 in No. 1 doubles.

  • Special-teams TDs propel Tell...

    TELL CITY—Tell City built a 14-0 lead before it ran a play from scrimmage and beat Perry Central 48-0 in eighth grade football Thursday.
    Hunter Beckort returned the opening kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown and Bren Miller ran for the two-point conversion.
    Perry Central had to punt four plays later and Shane Braunecker returned it 50 yards for a touchdown to put Tell City up 14-0.
    Beckort made a 32-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and ran for the two-point conversion.

  • Heritage Hills tops Tell City 2-0

    LINCOLN CITY—Heritage Hills prevailed over Tell City 2-0 in what Tell City Coach Pat Jarboe called “a huge defensive battle” in PAC boys soccer Thursday.
    “Sam Rogers played an awesome game at goalie,” added Jarboe. “Our defense was stellar in limiting Heritage Hills to two goals. They are a quality team - this is a team that tied Mater Dei 0-0 and beat Forest Park 5-0.

  • Braves defeat Commodores

    LEOPOLD—Tecumseh looked like the defending PAC champion it is as it beat Perry Central 25-19, 25-11, 25-12 in volleyball Thursday.
    Terissa Roark made six kills and two blocks for Perry Central.
    Latisha James also made two blocks. Abby Reed added four kills and Brooke Mullis and Ryann Lynch each made three.
    Addy Davis had 11 assists and Kirstyn Linne added six.
    Lynch made seven digs, Mullis six, and Davis four. Lynch served three aces.
    Tecumseh won the JV match 25-14, 25-16.

  • Kohnert leads Tell City to...

    LANESVILLE—Emma Kohnert served 22 points and made nine kills and two blocks as Tell City defeated Lanesville 25-15, 25-9, 25-19 in volleyball Wednesday.
    Kohnert served five aces. That matched the total of teammate Morgan Schuetter, who had 17 points.
    One of Kohnert’s blocks was solo and one was assisted. Emili Stephens also made one block of each type.
    Kammie Jo Hayes made 10 kills. Rachel Malone had 14 assists and Emily Hagedorn added 13.
    Hayes made 14 digs and MaKaylee Buntin added six.

  • Graham wins 22-team North...

    RAMSEY—Perry Central’s Marcus Graham pulled away in the last half of the race to win North Harrison’s Cougar Classic boys cross country invitational Thursday.
    Perry Central finished 11th among 22 in team standings and Cannelton was 22nd.
    Elizabeth Dauby placed fourth in the girls race to lead Perry Central to seventh place in it.
    Graham won the 165-runner boys race in 16:18.2 to beat runner-up Cale Kilian, last year’s Jasper sectional winner, of Jasper by 16.5 seconds.

  • South Spencer runs over Tell City

    TELL CITY—Tell City was unable to stop South Spencer’s running game as the Rebels won 43-0 in PAC football Friday.
    The Marksmen gained one first down on their first possession but three plays later had to punt from their own 30-yard line.
    The punt went 40 yards with no return, so the Rebels started on their 30-yard line.
    On the first two plays South Spencer gained 5 yards. An offside penalty against the Marksmen on third down kept the Rebels’ drive alive.

  • Simpson’s running propels Perry...

    LEOPOLD—Perry Central football coach Greg Gibson moved Alex Simpson to tailback last week to try to get more speed in his backfield.
    Simpson is also a hard runner who is tough to bring down - even with two or three defenders hanging on him. “He squats 400 pounds so he’s got some leg strength,” said Gibson.
    Both attributes were frequently on display as he scored four touchdowns in Friday’s 49-8 PLAC victory over Crawford County.
