  • Brown named to academic all-state

    INDIANAPOLIS—Perry Central senior forward Trent Brown was named to the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association’s academic all-state first team released Monday.
    Fifty-seven seniors—29 boys and 28 girls—were chosen for the first team. Another 146 boys and 148 girls received honorable mention.
    To be eligible for the team players had to have a 3.5 grade-point average or higher on a 4.0 scale, a class rank in the upper 25 percent of their class, and an SAT score of at least 1,500 or an ACT score of 23.

    CANNELTON—Cannelton’s baseball team has a lot of unproven pitchers and hitters, but “our defense should be pretty good,” said Coach Mike Garrett.
    Larry Holman, who went 1-6 for the 2-16 Bulldogs last year, is the only returnee who saw significant mound action for the Bulldogs last year.
    He will be joined in the starting rotation by Drake Duke, a transfer from Tell City, and freshman Bryce Garrett.

    TELL CITY—Tell City’s boys track team was the only Perry County squad to win a sectional last spring. But the Marksmen will feature several new faces as they try to repeat that championship this year.

    NCAA tourney time means 68 teams are excited about being chosen for the Division I basketball tourney.
    It also means a lot of teams that thought they had a chance at making the tourney at the start of the season are disappointed and some are firing their coaches.
    Already gone are Bruce Weber of Illinois and Doc Sadler of Nebraska.

    LINCOLN CITY—Jarrett Hawhee repeated as champion and the Craig brothers won their first titles as Tell City finished fifth in the PAC junior high wrestling tourney Saturday.
    Hawhee won the 125-pound title after taking the 105 crown last year.
    He went 4-0 with two forfeit wins, an 8-3 decision over Colton O’Neal, and a 5-0 win over Josh Miller of Gibson Southern in the finals.
    Joe Craig went 3-0 with two pins to take the 95-pound title.
