  • PC boys, Tell City girls win

TELL CITY - Jake Schwartz was the individual winner and Perry Central placed all five of its scorers in the top nine to win the Lincoln Trail Invitational boys cross country meet Tuesday.

Sarah Goffinet won the girls race to lead Tell City to that title, giving the Perry County schools sweeps of the top spots.

Perry Central placed second in the girls race and Tell City was fifth in the boys race.

  • Tell City falls twice

ROCKPORT - Tell City won the top two singles matches but South Spencer won the rest to nip the Marksmen 3-2 in PAC boys tennis Wednesday.

Andy Chinn beat Matthew Belcher 6-0, 6-4 in No. 1 singles and Jake Roland beat Michael Chamness 6-3, 6-2 in No. 2 for the Marksmen's victories.

All but one set of the other three matches were close.

South Spencer's Kyle Mason edged Chris Kohnert 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) in No. 3 singles.

The first set of No. 1 doubles also went to a tie-breaker and it took the Rebels three sets to win in No. 2 doubles.

  • Improved passing, blocking help...

TELL CITY - Tell City volleyball coach Dalonda Hayes said better passing and defense helped the Marksmen beat Perry Central 25-17, 25-11, 29-27 Thursday.

"I think our passing was a key tonight," said Hayes. "When we can get the ball to our setter without having to run her everywhere, Julie (Davis)'s going to get the ball to our hitters.

"And our defense was better. Our (back-row) coverage was better and we had more blocks tonight - we hadn't been blocking very well (in recent matches)."

Lauren Goffinet made six blocks and Elizabeth Kohnert added four for the Marksmen.

  • Chargers beat Tell City

TELL CITY - Pike Central rushed for 293 and defeated Tell City 26-7 Friday in Pocket Athletic Conference football.

The Chargers' Travis Frazier was faster than any Tell City player and used his superior speed to rush 16 times for 189 yards and two touchdowns.

He ripped off runs of 30, 49, and 39 yards, getting outside each time.

Tell City's lone score came from Kyle Osborne on a 1-yard run in the third quarter.

Osborne carried the ball 23 times for 72 yards to lead the Marksmen.

  • Commodores stop Senators

CAMPBELLSBURG - Perry Central's bend-but-don't-break defense stopped two West Washington drives inside the 20-yard line in the second half to beat the Senators 14-6 in PLAC football Friday.

The Commodores won despite playing most of the game without T.J. Hall, who entered the game as the leading rusher in southwestern Indiana.

Hall suffered an ankle injury with 10:14 left in the second quarter after carrying the ball 11 times for 42 yards.

He may return to action against Tell City this week.

  • Senators to try to stop PC'...

CAMPBELLSBURG - Perry Central has rushed for over 300 yards in every football game this season, so Coach Mike Spencer expects West Washington to concentrate on stopping the Commodores' running game when they meet Friday at 7 p.m.

The 2-1 Senators usually play a 4-4 defense. But "against us (in recent years) they've played a 5-3 and even a six- or seven-man line trying to stop the run," said Spencer Monday. "So we think they're going to bring a lot of people."

  • PC boys, girls win Perry-Spencer...

LEOPOLD - Perry Central had five of the top 10 finishers as it won the Perry-Spencer boys cross country invitational Tuesday.

Perry Central also won the girls meet, though Tell City freshman Sarah Goffinet was the individual winner.

Tell City finished third in both meets.

Heritage Hills star Cody Stein won the boys meet in 17:08.50. Tell City's Alex Fenn was second in 17:29.00.

But five of the next eight finishers were from Perry Central.

  • Marksmen top Pats for first win

TELL CITY - Tell City won two singles matches and No. 1 doubles to beat Heritage Hills 3-2 in PAC boys tennis Tuesday.

Andy Chinn beat Zane Young 6-0, 6-2 in No. 1 and Jake Roland defeated Luke Zarnoth 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 in No. 2 for the Marksmen's singles victories.

Andy Kast and Greg Hollinden beat Josh Hancock and Max Schelle 6-2, 7-5 in No. 1 doubles.

Gibson Southern won both doubles matches and No. 2 singles to beat Tell City 3-2 at Gibson Southern Monday.

Chinn beat Trent Wallace 6-3, 6-2 in No. 1 singles.

  • PC 8th at Martinsville

MARTINSVILLE - Perry Central's boys and girls cross country teams could have easily won the smaller schools race at the Artesian Classic Saturday.

But since the state cross country tourney is not divided into classes, both Commodore teams chose to enter the big schools race to see how they compare with some of the top teams in the southern half of the state.

Both Perry Central teams finished eighth in the 13-team meet.

  • TC favored vs. Chargers

TELL CITY - Tell City's football team has struggled to score this year but will be favored to get its first victory Friday, according to the Sagarin computer ratings.

The Marksmen will host 0-2 Pike Central for a PAC game Friday at 6:30 p.m. Among 318 football teams in the state, Tell City is ranked 240th and Pike Central 269th by Jeff Sagarin.

Knowing they have a reasonable chance to win could be a morale boost to Tell City's young players.
