  • Bulldogs lack height, depth...

CANNELTON—It’s a familiar story for Cannelton’s girls basketball this year: The team has some talent but lacks height and depth.
There are only six players on the team and one is a freshman with limited junior high experience. And no player is taller than 5-foot-71⁄2.
But the Bulldogs return three players who started in the Class A sectional championship game last year for a team that went 15-7, tying the second best record in school history.

TELL CITY—Improved ball-handling could be the key for a veteran Tell City girls basketball team to post a winning record this season.
The Marksmen return all five players who started in the sectional for their 7-15 team last year, and all are projected to start again.
That means 6-foot senior center McKenzie Hayes at center, 5-9 junior Logan Flannagan and 5-6 senior Lacey Briggs at forwards, and seniors Jami Rowe and Hannah Schaefer at guards.

LEOPOLD—The inside game is the main strength of Perry Central’s girls basketball team this year but could also be a weakness at times.
Ashley Graves, a 6-foot-1 senior center, returns after already making All-PLAC twice. She led the Commodores with averages of 14.3 points, 10.7 rebounds and 3.0 blocked shots per game and field-goal shooting at 55.5 percent last year.

TELL CITY—Tell City junior defensive back Brennan Malone was named to the All-PAC football team Monday, continuing a family tradition.
His father, Kelly Malone, and uncles Dan, Pat and Tim Malone all made all-conference football teams for Tell City. His first cousins, Zach and Sean Malone (Pat’s sons) made all-conference for Princeton when Pat was coaching there.

Spencer Wright made the team as a defensive lineman for the second year in a row.
Senior offensive lineman Greg Coultas and running back Austin LeClere were also repeat selections, though LeClere made it as the punter last year and Coultas was an at-large selection last year.

Last month when we published a special section honoring Cannelton on its 175th anniversary, I dug through my files to find photos of many old Cannelton teams to accompany the story on Cannelton’s sports history.
