HAWESVILLE, Ky. - Hancock County held Cannelton scoreless the first quarter and beat the Bulldogs 53-29 in girls basketball Friday.

The Hornets jumped to a 26-0 first-quarter lead as they hit 10 of 18 shots from the field, including 3 of 8 from three-point range, and 3 of 3 free throws.

Cannelton was 0 for 12 from the field that period and committed eight turnovers.

The Hornets did not use a full-court press but did a good job playing the passing lanes in their 2-3 zone defense. Some of their steals led to easy baskets at the other end.

HAWESVILLE, Ky. - Hancock County took advantage of some interesting foul calls to overcome Cannelton's 22-point third quarter lead and edged the Bulldogs 81-80 in boys basketball Friday.

There were 28 fouls called on each team, though Hancock County played more physically on defense.

A huge majority of the block/charge calls went against Cannelton.

On three of them a Cannelton player was called for a blocking foul when he appeared to be set, including one on which the offensive player lowered his shoulder and forearm into the defender.

INDIANAPOLIS - Tell City will have a rematch with a recent opponent but Perry Central and Cannelton will face teams they have not played this year in the girls basketball sectionals.

Sectional pairings were drawn by the IHSAA Sunday.

Tell City will host a six-team Class 2A sectional and will face North Posey in the second game Tuesday at approximately 7:45 p.m. That follows South Spencer vs. Forest Park at 6 p.m.

Perry Central and Mater Dei drew into the bye bracket and will face each other Friday, Feb. 8, at 7:45 p.m., after Tuesday's winners meet at 6 p.m.

LEOPOLD - Perry Central fought back from a 13-point halftime deficit to have a chance to tie in the final minute but lost to Mitchell 61-58 in PLAC girls basketball Saturday.

"We had some trouble with their 1-3-1 half-court trap in the first half," said Perry Central Coach Sarah Spindler. "Then we made some adjustments and handled it well the second half.

"Our guards played really well. We had Audra (Gehlhausen, who had missed five games with an injury) back and that gave us a little more depth at the guard position. I think that may have helped."
