  • Marksmen whip Wildcats for...

    TELL CITY - Lauren Goffinet scored 27 points as Tell City beat Mater Dei 58-42 to win the Tell City Class 2A girls basketball sectional Saturday.

    The Marksmen, 17-7, will play Austin, 20-3 and ranked third in the state, in the second game of the Forest Park regional Saturday at approximately 11:40 a.m., Tell City time.

    The championship game will be at 6:30 that night.

    Tell City dominated Saturday's sectional final. Mater Dei's only lead was 1-0 in the first 30 seconds and the Marksmen built a 23-9 lead in the first 12 minutes.

  • Rebels edge PC in OT

    LEOPOLD - Perry Central missed three shots in the last 0:37 of overtime and lost to South Spencer 57-55 in boys basketball Saturday.

    The Commodores missed two shots within six feet of the basket, then had to foul to stop the clock.

    The Rebels' Jake Haynes missed the front end of the one-and-bonus free-throw situation, giving the Commodores another chance.

    T.J. Lamon got an open three-point shot on the right wing, but it bounced off the rim as the horn sounded.

  • Cannelton beats Shoals

    CANNELTON - After a tough road loss at Hancock County Friday, Cannelton had just enough stamina to defeat Shoals 57-50 in boys basketball Saturday.

    The Bulldogs improved to 7-10, giving them their most wins in five years. The Jug Rox fell to 0-15.

    Cannelton Coach Brian Garrett said, "We were tired and standing up straight."

    Dillon Powers came off the bench to give the Bulldogs a lift half way into the first quarter, though. He hit their first three-point and was also the first to score for the Bulldogs in the second quarter.

  • Marksmen nip Titans in OT

    FORT BRANCH - Ryan Zuelly scored 27 points, including five in overtime, as Tell City beat Gibson Southern 49-46 in PAC boys basketball Saturday.

    The Marksmen basically beat the Titans at their own game, working the ball patiently for good shots and hitting a high percentage from three-point range.

    They outshot the Titans from the field overall 55.6 percent to 41.9 percent.

    Tell City hit 8 of 12 from three-point range, with Zuelly making 5 of 7 and fellow guard Andy Chinn hitting 3 of 5.

  • Balanced Marksmen pull away from...

    TELL CITY - Tell City overcame a slow start on offense by beating North Posey's trap and beat the Vikings 53-43 in Class 2A girls basketball sectional first-round action Tuesday.

    Tell City, 15-7, will face 16-5 Forest Park in the semifinals Friday at 6 p.m.

    Tell City's win Tuesday avenged a four-point regular-season loss to North Posey that cost the Marksmen a share of the PAC title.

    "The last time their 2-2-1 half-court trap gave us fits," said Tell City Coach John Lyons. "This time we were ready for it.

  • TC 4th in girls sectional

    JASPER - Erika Hauenstein and Chelsea Malone each placed second in an individual event and a relay to lead Tell City to fourth place in the 14-team Jasper girls swim sectional Saturday.

    The Marksmen scored 165 points, their highest total in eight years. Jasper won the sectional with 302 points.

    The preliminaries were postponed from Thursday to Friday due to the threat of severe weather. The swimmers thus had less rest than usual before the finals and Tell City Coach Mike Page said his girls "looked tired."

  • PC girls overtake Southridge

    LEOPOLD - Perry Central survived a 2 for 24 field-goal shooting start and beat Southridge 36-30 in girls basketball Monday.

    The Commodores trailed 14-5 with 18 seconds left in the first half before Alie Schroeder scored on her own rebound for just their third field goal of the game.

    They still trailed 26-24 with 4:40 left in the game. Then they started working the ball inside to Schroeder, who began posting up strongly.

    She scored two consecutive baskets from the low post to put the Commodores up 28-26 with 3:48 left.

  • Tell City goes 0-6 in wrestling...

    NEWBURGH - All six Tell City wrestlers who competed in the Castle regional Saturday lost in the first round.

    Greg Batie fell to eventual champion Brad Niemeier of Mater Dei in the heavyweight class.

    Joey Woznicki lost to eventual second-place finisher Danie Schweizer of Mater Dei in the 130-pound weight class.

    A.J. Flynn lost to Dylan Hall of Harrison in the 112 class.

    Andy Kast (125) lost to Joseph Hoehn of Mount Vernon.

    Justin Kleemann (152) lost to Kyle Sandwith of Memorial.

    Dylan Froehlich lost a close match to Zack Ruggeri of Mount Vernon.

  • Tell City girls beat Rangers in...

    TELL CITY - Tell City hit 20 of 26 free throws to beat Forest Park 37-33 in PAC girls basketball Saturday.

    The victory enabled the Marksmen to finish in a three-way tie for second place in the nine-team conference with Forest Park and North Posey, each at 6-2.

    Gibson Southern won the conference title at 7-1, with its only loss coming against Tell City.

    Forest Park outrebounded Tell City 37-23 Saturday and outshot the Marksmen from the field 28.9 percent to 24.2 percent.

  • Three Tell Citians champs at...

    JASPER - Cameron Kessinger, Devon Casebolt and Jordan Lloyd of the Tell City Wrestling Club won titles in Jasper's folkstyle tourney Jan. 27.

    Kessinger (midget 80-pound weight class) went 3-0 with two pins and a 16-1 technical fall.

    Casebolt (bantam 45) and Lloyd (peewee 50) each went 1-1 plus a bye.

    Trevor Jennings (peewee 45) placed second and Tretter Lyons (bantam 65) placed third.

    Mason Dean (midget 75) and Justin Alvarez (schoolboy 84) each placed fourth.

    Tell City also competed in tourneys at Jeffersonville Jan. 20 and Princeton Jan. 12.
