  • TC boys 5th in swim sectional

    JASPER - Tell City placed in the top six in all three relays and finished fifth in the 12-team Jasper boys swim sectional Saturday.

    The Marksmen scored 108 points. Bedford-North Law-rence won with 312.

    Zach Avallone, Nick Bower, Greg Clayton and Isaac Schaefer placed fourth in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:38.01 for Tell City's highest finish.

    Those same four boys took fifth in the 400 free relay in 3:42.97.

    Justin Peter, Bryson May, Nick Bower and Jacob Bryant placed sixth in the 200 medley relay in 1:59.07.

  • Young Abe was Perry County'...

    Were it not for John Wilkes Booth's bullets, Abraham Lincoln might have turned 199 last week (hey, you never know - people are living longer).

    Committees in Kentucky, Indiana and Illinois - the three states in which he lived - already have plans in high gear for Lincoln's 200th birthday celebration.

    Tell City is also gearing up for a celebration of its own, this summer's 150th anniversary of the town's founding.

  • Woznicki makes academic all-state

    INDIANAPOLIS - Tell City senior Joey Woznicki has been named to the wrestling academic all-state first team by the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association.

    Woznicki competed in the 130-pound weight class for the Marksmen this season, compiling a 25-16 record and qualifying for the regional for the fourth time.

    He ranks third among 134 in Tell City's senior class academically with a 3.956 grade-point average. He scored 28 on the American College Test.

  • Chargers nip Tell City thanks to...

    TELL CITY - Pike Central took advantage of some Tell City lapses on defense and beat the Marksmen 65-64 in overtime in PAC boys basketball Thursday.

    On paper the game appeared to be a huge mismatch in Tell City's favor. The Marksmen entered the game with a 13-5 record while Pike Central was 5-11 and had won just one PAC game - that by one point.

    The Chargers had lost at home by 33 points to Southridge, a team Tell City beat on the road.

    But the Chargers outshot Tell City from the field 52.4 percent to 43.4 percent and won the rebound battle 28-25.

  • Paoli overtakes Perry Central in...

    PAOLI - Logan Laswell scored a three-point play inside with 4.6 seconds left to give Paoli a 69-67 PLAC boys basketball win over Perry Central Friday.

    The game featured seven lead changes in the fourth quarter and four in the last minute alone.

    Wes Linette scored inside on an assist from Zach Rogier with 0:20 left to put Perry Central ahead 67-66.

    The Rams then pushed the ball upcourt to Laswell, who scored on a drive and was fouled. He also made the free throw.

  • Marksmen fall short vs. Austin...

    FERDINAND - Katy McIntosh's strong drives in the third quarter lifted Austin past Tell City 65-52 in the first round of the Class 2A girls basketball regional Saturday.

    McIntosh, the Eagles' leading scorer for the season with a 20.3-point average, was held in check in the first half, scoring six points on one field goal and four free throws. She sat out part of that half in foul trouble.

    Tell City scored the first four points of the third quarter on two free throws apiece by Kara McClintic and Lauren Goffinet to take a 29-27 lead with 5:51 left in that period.

  • Marksman girls didn't have...

    All the obstacles Tell City faced in girls basketball this season makes the team' s sectional title all the more remarkable.

    The Marksmen did return four starters and their top reserve from last year' s 17-6 team that possibly should have won the sectional (Forest Park beat them by one point on a free throw with no time left on the clock).

    But there was little depth behind them, meaning avoiding injuries would be a key.

  • Bulldogs repel Crusaders

    CANNELTON - Three players scored at least 20 points as Cannelton beat Columbus Christian 94-65 in boys basketball Saturday.

    With the victory, the Bulldogs are now 8-10, tying their most regular-season wins in 18 years.

    Justin Dooley and Tyler Aud each scored 22 points for the Bulldogs and Chase Gerber added 20.

    Reserve Dillon Powers was their fourth double-figure scorer with 12 points as the Bulldogs had their second highest scoring game of the season.

  • Tell City to face No. 3 Austin...

    FERDINAND - Austin, Tell City' s opponent in the Forest Park Class 2A girls basketball regional Saturday at 11:40 a.m., plays a similar style to Mater Dei, whom Tell City beat for the sectional title last Saturday.

    So said Tell City Coach John Lyons after watching videotapes of Austin Monday.

    " They play a lot like Mater Dei," said Lyons. " They like to get up and down the floor.

    " They like to drive and kick it out, and they have two real good three-point shooters. And on defense they like to get out in your face."

  • Perry Central cold in loss to...

    DUBOIS - Northeast Dubois got second shots and controlled the boards to defeat Perry Central 61-50 in boys basketball Thursday.

    Nick Huber hit a shot to pull the Commodores within one at 42-41 with 7:21 left.

    Perry Central then tried a full-court press, but Northeast Dubois' Josh Breitwieser made a short jump shot to put the Jeeps up by three.

    Even though the Commo-dores did not score for the next 3:17, they were still down only five points.

    Then Huber made a three-point shot from the right side of the key.
