  • Zuelly selected for All-PAC team

    TELL CITY - Tell City guard Ryan Zuelly was named to the All-PAC boys basketball team Monday in voting by conference coaches.

    Zuelly, a 6-foot senior, led the Marksmen in scoring at 14.8 points per game, in assists with 3.6 per game, and in free-throw shooting at 75.5 percent.

    He averaged 2.9 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game.

    He hit 42.0 percent from the field, including 33.9 percent from three-point range.

    Tell City Coach John Hayes was pleased Zuelly made the team but said he was disappointed he was the only Marksman on the 10-man honor squad.

  • Schroeder picks Vincennes

    LEOPOLD - Perry Central senior Alie Schroeder signed a letter of intent Thursday to continue her volleyball career at Vincennes University.

    Vincennes Coach Tina Miller said Schroeder will probably play middle hitter, the position she played most of the time in high school, for the Trail Blazers. "Or perhaps right side. But we're recruiting her as a middle hitter."

    Asked how much she expects Schroeder to play next year, the coach said, "I think she'll play a lot. That's the advantage of a junior college. We have no returning middle (hitter)s next year."

  • Bueltel's 3-pointers spark...

    HUNTINGBURG - Brett Bueltel hit four three-point shots in the second half as Mater Dei overtook Tell City to win the Huntingburg Class 2A basketball sectional 54-41 Saturday.

    Tell City's defensive strategy was "to make them beat us from outside because their big guys (6-foot-9 center Jake Hassler and 6-6 forward Matt Dickerson) were so good inside," said Tell City Coach John Hayes.

    That strategy meant playing a 2-3 zone and double-teaming Hassler whenever he got the ball inside.

  • Free-throw shooting makes...

    OAKLAND CITY - Tecumseh used 85.7 percent free-throw shooting and strong defense to beat Cannelton 78-45 in Class A boys basketball sectional semifinals Friday.

    Foul trouble hurt Cannelton early, as the Bulldogs' leading scorer, Tyler Aud, picked up his third foul with 3:32 left in the first quarter.

    "We probably gave up 40 points in missed free-throws and shots from the paint in the first half," remarked Cannelton Coach Brian Garrett.

    Tecumseh committed 23 fouls, three more than Cannelton, in the very physical game.

  • Marksmen's 2-3 zone stops...

    HUNTINGBURG - After falling behind early, Tell City switched to a 2-3 zone defense and beat South Spencer 56-46 in Class 2A boys basketball sectional semifinals Friday.

    The Marksmen were scheduled to play Mater Dei, a team they beat 57-49 at Tell City Jan. 15, in the championship game Saturday.

    Friday South Spencer built a 10-5 lead against the Marksmen's man-to-man defense in the first five minutes.

  • Is Benson anonymous donor for IU...

    For years guessing the identity of the Washington Post's Watergate informant, "Deep Throat," was a national game.

    Now Indiana University basketball fans should be guessing who is the anonymous donor producing $550,000 of the $750,000 IU is paying Kelvin Sampson to buy out the rest of his coaching contract.

    It seems likely that this person will have considerable say in who Sampson's permanent replacement will be. As "Deep Throat" told the Post reporters, "Follow the money trail."

  • Carter scores 14 in back-to-back...

    TERRE HAUTE - Perry Central graduate Aaron Carter scored a season-high 14 points in back-to-back wins for Indiana State University's men's basketball team last week.

    Carter, a freshman guard, hit 4 of 6 shots from the field, including 1 of 2 from three-point range, and 5 of 6 free throws in an 83-73 win over Wichita State Feb. 19.

    He also had five rebounds in that game.

    He hit 5 of 7 from the field, including 3 of 5 three-pointers, and 1 of 1 at the free-throw line in a 79-62 win at Murray State Saturday.

  • Commodores overtake Patriots...

    LEOPOLD - A second-quarter turnaround on offense and defense spurred Perry Central past Heritage Hills 60-52 in boys basketball Saturday.

    The Commodores fell behind 13-6 in the first quarter, hitting only 3 of 13 shots from the field that period while Heritage Hills made 6 of 8.

    But in the second quarter Perry Central hit 6 of 9 shots from the field while Heritage Hills hit only 2 of 9 and missed its last six. The Patriots also committed five turnovers that period.

  • Rangers hold off Perry Central

    HUNTINGBURG - Perry Central rallied from a cold start to pull within two points three times in the fourth quarter but lost to Forest Park 46-39 in Class 2A first-round boys basketball sectional action Tuesday.

    Perry Central hit only 6 of 26 shots from the field in the first half and let Forest Park center Jordan Myers dominate the boards as the Rangers built a 29-15 halftime lead.

    But in the second half the Commodores went to some trapping defenses that seemed to rattle the Rangers.

  • McClintic winding up stellar...

    OWENSBORO, Ky. - Kentucky Wesleyan women's basketball coach Ron Smith thinks Laura McClintic's career for his Panthers has "turned out a whole lot better" than he envisioned when he recruited her from Tell City four years ago.

    When McClintic signed with Wesleyan in November 2003, Smith said, "She's a great shooter - you can't leave her open."

    But "I didn't anticipate her being this good a shooter," he said last Thursday.
