  • Commodores overtake Patriots...

    LEOPOLD - A second-quarter turnaround on offense and defense spurred Perry Central past Heritage Hills 60-52 in boys basketball Saturday.

    The Commodores fell behind 13-6 in the first quarter, hitting only 3 of 13 shots from the field that period while Heritage Hills made 6 of 8.

    But in the second quarter Perry Central hit 6 of 9 shots from the field while Heritage Hills hit only 2 of 9 and missed its last six. The Patriots also committed five turnovers that period.

  • Rangers hold off Perry Central

    HUNTINGBURG - Perry Central rallied from a cold start to pull within two points three times in the fourth quarter but lost to Forest Park 46-39 in Class 2A first-round boys basketball sectional action Tuesday.

    Perry Central hit only 6 of 26 shots from the field in the first half and let Forest Park center Jordan Myers dominate the boards as the Rangers built a 29-15 halftime lead.

    But in the second half the Commodores went to some trapping defenses that seemed to rattle the Rangers.

  • McClintic winding up stellar...

    OWENSBORO, Ky. - Kentucky Wesleyan women's basketball coach Ron Smith thinks Laura McClintic's career for his Panthers has "turned out a whole lot better" than he envisioned when he recruited her from Tell City four years ago.

    When McClintic signed with Wesleyan in November 2003, Smith said, "She's a great shooter - you can't leave her open."

    But "I didn't anticipate her being this good a shooter," he said last Thursday.

  • Boonville defeats Archers Tuesday

    TELL CITY - Matt Sabelhaus remained undefeated but Tell City lost to Boonville 76-33 in junior high wrestling Tuesday.

    Sabelhaus beat Kyle Snyder 7-0 in the 120-pound class.

    "Matt remains undefeated after wrestling five of the top teams in Southern Indiana," said Tell City Coach Mark Thomas.

    James Payne (heavyweight class) earned Tell City's only pin, finishing off Danny Robinson in just 19 seconds.

    Tucker Brown (120), Jordan Hosler (180) and Brian Self (200) won decisions.

  • Three events postponed due to ice

    PERRY COUNTY - Two Thursday sports events and one Friday involving Perry County teams were postponed due to icy weather.

    Perry Central's home boys basketball game with Heritage Hills was rescheduled, postponed Friday, was rescheduled the following night.

    No new date was announced for Tell City's junior high home swim meet with Northeast Dubois or junior high wrestling meet at Southridge, both called off Thursday.

  • Tell City received best draw

    With no seeding and with no sectionals having a number of teams divisible by four, the luck of the draw plays a large part in the IHSAA basketball tourney.

    So the fact that Tell City unquestionably received the best draw in this week's Huntingburg boys basketball sectional could be a good omen for the Marks-men.

    Tell City drew a first-round bye and has to beat only South Spencer (8-12 before Friday's game) to reach the championship game.

  • Bulldogs run past Aces

    CANNELTON - Cannelton used fast breaks and offensive rebounding to rout Cloverport 79-48 in boys basketball Friday.

    The Bulldogs used their full-court pressure to make 16 steals, many of which they turned into transition layups.

    They also got some fast breaks off defensive rebounds and quick outlet passes.

    Though Cloverport, with 6-foot-6 center Logan Melton, had the edge in overall size, Cannelton dominated the boards.

    The Bulldogs grabbed 45 rebounds, including 21 at their offensive end. They scored eight rebound baskets.

  • Raiders beat Cannelton on fourth...

    CANNELTON - Whitesville Trinity hit 16 of 21 free throws in the fourth quarter to beat Cannelton 84-73 in boys basketball Tuesday.

    Cannelton led after each of the first two quarters and trailed by only two points, 58-56, after three quarters.

    But the Raiders penetrated into the lane frequently in the fourth quarter to draw fouls. They also scored five field goals that period.

  • Defense, guard scoring lead TC...

    POSEYVILLE - Tell City's boys basketball team may have rediscovered its winning ways in time to build some momentum for the sectional.

    The Marksmen played strong defense and their starting guards matched North Posey's entire point output as the Marksmen won 47-37 Saturday afternoon.

    The win ended a 1-3 stretch for the Marksmen (with the only win coming in overtime) after they had started the season 12-2.

  • Braves overwhelm PC with...

    LEOPOLD - Tecumseh outscored Perry Central 22-4 in the second quarter and cruised to a 71-56 win in boys basketball Saturday.

    The Braves' big second quarter helped them build a 40-20 halftime lead.

    The Commodores hit only 7 of 21 from the floor in the first half for 33.3 percent.

    They also committed 11 turnovers in the first half, including nine in the second quarter. They had 18 turnovers for the game.
