    CANNELTON—Cannelton could not find its shooting stroke in the second half of a 67-58 boys basketball loss to Crothersville Friday.
    The Bulldogs shot well in the first half, hitting 12 of 23 from the field for 52.2 percent to take a 36-35 halftime lead.
    The second half would not be as kind to the Bulldogs as they made just 7 of 31 for 22.6 percent.

    MOUNT VERNON—Tell City improved its shooting and ball-handling to give undefeated Mount Vernon a scare before falling 62-46 in boys basketball Friday.
    The Marksmen, playing without their two tallest frontline starters due to injuries, went on a 17-2 run in the middle of the game to take a 37-31 lead with 5:32 left in the third quarter.
    At that point Tell City had hit 14 of 21 field-goal attempts for the game, including 7 of 9 from three-point range.

    LEOPOLD—Twelve third-quarter turnovers proved too much for Perry Central to overcome in a 56-52 PLAC girls basketball loss to Paoli Thursday.
    Perry Central led 21-19 at halftime and scored the first basket of the third quarter on an 18-footer by Lynsay Goffinet.
    Paoli then went on a 12-0 run, though, to build a 31-23 lead with 5:27 left in the period.
    That streak included three baskets directly off Perry Central turnovers against Paoli’s full-court press.

    TELL CITY—Aaron Carter scored 48 points as Perry Central defeated Tell City 133-127 in an alumni basketball game Tuesday.

  • Tell City finishes last in Mater...

    TELL CITY—Cody Osborne was the only Tell City wrestler to win a match as the Marksmen finished 16th in the 16-team Mater Dei Holiday Classic last weekend.
    Union County, Ky., won the tourney with 203.5 points, the first time in the tourney’s 29-year history that the host team did not win it.
    Tell City scored four points on the strength of a second-round pin by Osborne in the heavyweight division.
    Osborne got pinned by No. 1 seed Nathan Wright of Mater Dei in 48 seconds in the first round.

  • Bulldogs outfox Fox Creek

    CANNELTON—A stomach virus slowed Brandon Cook, but his teammates picked up the slack as Cannelton beat Fox Creek Christian 77-66 in the consolation game of the Bulldog Invitational boys basketball tourney Saturday.
    Cook entered the game averaging 29.3 points per game. but was held to 18 on 5 for 22 field-goal shooting and 8 of 11 free throws in less than 23 minutes of playing time.
    “I was running him in for about two minutes at a time,” said Cannelton Coach Brian Garrett.

    LINCOLN CITY—Tell City committed 24 turnovers in a 29-27 loss to Crawford County in the third-place game of the PSC Holiday Classic boys basketball tourney Saturday.
    “The first half we had the best field-goal percentage (9 of 16 for 56.3 percent) we’ve had all season,” noted Tell City Coach Brent Owen. “So if we take care of the ball like we did against Northeast Dubois, we win the game.

  • A different look at basketball...

    Readers of my Nov. 26 column know I am not a big fan of new baseball statistics created by sabermetricians.
    And generally I feel the same way about revised ways of looking at basketball statistics, though some of them can be helpful.
    In the Pro Basketball Prospectus published each year by Bradford Doolittle and Kevin Pelton, instead of traditional statistics such as points and rebounds per game, they list the percentage of rebounds per game that each player hauls in.
