  • Tell City softball team has mix...

    TELL CITY - Tell City's girls softball team returns five starters from last year's 12-12 team but may also start two sophomores and two freshmen.

    And three of the returning starters will be playing different positions than last year, though they are positions they played extensively last summer.

    New coach Dusty Beard, a longtime assistant with the Marksmen, expects pitching and defense to be among the team's strengths.

  • McClintic, Goffinet earn all-...

    INDIANAPOLIS - Two Tell City players have received honorable mention on the first girls basketball all-state team chosen by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.

    The IBCA selected a 15-girl senior team and a 15-girl underclass team (freshmen through juniors).

    Approximately 75 players received honorable mention on each list.

    Kara McClintic received honorable mention on the senior team and junior Lauren Goffinet made the underclass honorable mention list.

  • Red Sox should repeat

    Many sportswriters are picking Boston to win the World Series this year, which is kind of unusual for the Red Sox.

    When they won the world title in 2004 and last year, virtually no one had predicted they would.

    Even I was unsure last year, as Detroit looked to be a solid contender to dethrone them in the American League, though as it turned out injuries to Kenny Rogers and Gary Sheffield kept the Tigers from even making the playoffs.

  • Tell City defense looks strong...

    TELL CITY - Finding some pitching depth and a catcher to go with the rest of the Marksmen's strong up-the-middle defense are keys for Tell City's baseball team.

    The Marksmen will have their third starting catcher in three years despite not graduating any of them.

    Two years ago Michael DuPre started there as a sophomore, but last year he was unable to catch because he was coming off knee surgery. He is slated to play first base this year.

    Mike Maddle started at catcher last year as a freshman and was second on the team in hitting, but he has moved to Gibson Southern.

  • PC girls defeat Tell City

    TELL CITY - Jessica Huber won two individual races and two relays to lead Perry Central past Tell City 73-50 in girls track Thursday.

    Huber won the 100-meter intermediate hurdles in 17.30 seconds and the 400 dash in 1:08.20.

    She teamed with Brianna Crockett, Tessa Lynch and Lavina Schwartz to win the 1600 relay in 4:45.08.

    Huber, Crook, Crockett and Arika Kemp won the 400 relay in 55.93.

    Crockett also won the 200 dash in 28.94.

    Kemp won the 100 dash in 13.3.

    Lynch won the 800 in 2:42.71.

  • PC boys outrun Tell City

    TELL CITY - Nick Huber and Corey Kimball each won two individual events as Perry Central won the Perry County boys track meet Thursday.

    The Commodores scored 75 points, Tell City 44, and Cannelton 3.

    Huber won both hurdles races, taking the 110-meter high hurdles in 14.75 seconds and the 300 intermediate hurdles in 39.95.

    Kimball won two distance races, running the 1600 in 4:44 and the 3200 in 10:9.67.

    Zach Hagedorn and Michael Ernst each won one individual race and two relays.

    Hagedorn won the 400-meter dash in 56.06.

  • Archers tie for 2nd in PAC

    LINCOLN CITY - Justin Alvarez, Jessie Lawalin, Matt Sabelhaus and James Payne won their weight classes to lead Tell City to a tie for second place in the PAC junior high wrestling tourney Saturday.

    Tell City and Pike Central each scored 201 points, eight behind champion Heritage Hills.

    Payne pinned all three of his opponents in the heavyweight class.

    He nailed John Johnson of Gibson Southern in 11 seconds and Dalton Miller of Pike Central in 11.7 seconds to reach the finals.

  • Huber on Indiana all-star ballot

    INDIANAPOLIS - Perry Central guard Nick Huber is on the Indiana All-Star ballot for the annual Indiana vs. Kentucky senior basketball all-star series.

    Huber is one of 114 players on the ballot released Wednesday by The Indianapolis Star, the Indiana game's sponsor.

    Huber averaged 20.5 points and 6.7 rebounds per game and hit 83.0 percent of his free throws this season, leading the Commodores in all three categories.

  • Tell City girls strong in throws...

    TELL CITY - Despite a lack of numbers, Tell City girls track coach Katie Chinn hopes her team's strength in the throws and distance races will offset a lack of experienced sprinters.

    The Marksmen have 16 girls on their roster, one more than last year but three fewer than the previous year.

    "We'll probably be strongest in the throws and distance events," said Chinn, in her first year as head coach after serving as assistant coach the last two years.

  • Perry Central boys set sights on...

    LEOPOLD - Perry Central boys track coach Jason Barnett would like for his team to win the PLAC title for the third year in a row.

    But "winning the sectional is probably our main goal," he said. "We've never won one in boys track at our school."

    He has 32 boys on the roster, "the most we've ever had," he noted. And "they've been really working hard - as hard as we can considering the weather (rain and snow have forced some practices indoors)."
