  • Tecumseh outhits Tell City

    LYNNVILLE - Tecumseh pounded out nine hits to beat Tell City 6-4 in PAC baseball Wednesday.

    The Braves scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning to take the lead for good.

    Tell City had scored three runs in the top of the first against Tecumseh starter Dalton Froman.

    "We did a decent job of putting the ball in play," said Tell City Coach Phil DeSpain.

    He said the Marksmen might have scored more runs that inning but "we had a baserunning error and got out at the plate.

    "After the first inning we didn't hit him much at all."

  • PC shuts out Cougars

    LEOPOLD - Tony Backer and Bo Gibson combined to pitch a two-hit shutout as Perry Central beat North Harrison 1-0 in a baseball season opener Wednesday.

    Backer pitched the first three innings, giving up no hits and three walks and striking out six.

    He left after three innings because "we were focusing on pitch count," said Ty Guillaume, not wanting to overextend a pitcher's arm early in the season. Backer threw 27 pitches in the first inning.

    Gibson pitched the final four innings. He gave up two hits and one walk and struck out four.

  • Gibson on South stars

    INDIANAPOLIS - Continuing a family tradition, Perry Central's Bo Gibson has been named to the South team for this summer's Indiana North-South football all-star game.

    Gibson, a two-way standout at running back and defensive back for the Commodores, is listed as a free safety on the South roster, though the team's coaches may use the players at whatever position they think they need them.

    Gibson's brother, Derek, played defensive end for the South team last year and won the team's mental attitude award.

  • Rain forces more postponements

    Rain continued to play havoc with Perry County sports schedules, forcing postponement of seven events Thursday through Saturday.

    Wednesday was the only day last week that no local sports events were called off due to rain.

    Thursday Perry Central's home boys and girls track meets with Wood Memorial and Heritage Hills, Tell City's home girls tennis match with Paoli, and Perry Central's boys golf match with Southridge and Tecumseh at Old English were postponed.

  • Raiders' depth beats...

    HUNTINGBURG - Southridge used its superior depth to overwhelm Tell City 81-42 in girls track Tuesday.

    "They had a lot of girls," said Tell City Coach Katie Chinn. "They had at least 10 people in the 800(-meter run)."

    Dana Sibrel won both throwing events to lead Tell City.

    She tossed the discus 97 feet, 6 inches and the shot 33 feet, 6 inches.

    Elizabeth Kohnert cleared 4 feet, 10 inches to clear the high jump, giving the Marksmen wins in three of the four field events.

  • Cannelton's softball team...

    CANNELTON - Many people consider fastpitch softball primarily a pitcher-catcher game, so the good news for Cannelton's girls team is it has its starting pitcher and catcher returning from last season.

    The bad news for the Bulldogs is they have only one other starter returning from last year's 2-12 team--and she will be playing a different position this year.

    There are no seniors and only two juniors on the Bulldogs' 14-girl roster. "We're very, very young," said Coach Brian Garrett.

  • Memorial's big bats beat...

    TELL CITY - Evansville Memorial pounded out 13 hits, including four for extra bases, to beat Tell City 13-2 in baseball Saturday.

    The Tigers scored in every inning but the fourth as they won the game in six innings by the 10-run rule.

    They hurt Tell City pitching throughout their batting order. Their No. 9 batter went 4 for 4 with a double and four RBIs and they got three hits, including two doubles, from two batters in the No. 8 slot.

  • PC dominates triangular

    RAMSEY - Rachael Rayford won two individual distance races to lead Perry Central to victory in a girls triangular track meet Tuesday.

    Perry Central scored 89 points, North Harrison 46, and Paoli 26.

    The Commodores used their depth to dominate the meet. They won only six of the 13 individual events but took the top three places in three of them. They also won all three relays.

    Rayford won the 1600-meter run in 6:01.95 and the 800 in 2:45.9.

    She teamed with Lavina Schwartz, Tessa Lynch and Audra Gehlhausen to win the 3200 relay in 11:23.37.

  • Lyons named coach of year;...

    TELL CITY - Tell City's John Lyons has been named District 2 coach of the year and his point guard, Kara McClintic, was chosen all-district by the Hoosier Basketball Coaches Association.

    Lyons will be co-coach of the East team with District 1 coach of the year Jason Lane of Vincennes Lincoln in the HBCA's girls all-star game April 20 at the Evansville Sports Academy.

    But McClintic apparently will not get to play in the game due to a format change this year.

  • Rebels hold off Cannelton

    ROCKPORT - Cannelton didn't score a run or even get a hit Tuesday. But the Bulldogs' 4-0 baseball loss to defending Class 2A state champion South Spencer would still have to be considered a moral victory.

    The Bulldogs' game with South Spencer was rained out last year, but the previous two years they lost 49-0 and 41-1 to the Rebels.

    Tuesday's game was close because the Bulldogs improved their defense and got strong pitching from Stephen Lane and Tyler Aud.

    Lane pitched the first five innings, giving up six hits, three walks and only one earned run. He struck out three.
