    LEOPOLD—Perry Central graduated its top two pitchers and four of its top hitters from last year’s 8-12 baseball team. But the Commodores return a strong defensive infield.
    That is why second-year coach Phil Zellers said Thursday, “I think defense again will be our main strength.”
    He is concerned about the lack of pitching depth, though.

  • Kohnert, Cook, Graves to be in...

    LEBANON—Chris Kohnert of Tell City, Brandon Cook of Cannelton, and Ashley Graves of Perry Central have been invited to play in the Indiana Elite North-South All-Star Challenge at Lebanon High School April 14-15.
    Graves will play in the girls junior division 2A game at 9:30 a.m. Perry County time Saturday, April 14.
    Cook will play in the boys junior division 1A game 8 a.m. Sunday, April 15.
    Kohnert will play in the boys senior division 2A game at 3:30 p.m. April 15.

  • Brown named to academic all-state

    INDIANAPOLIS—Perry Central senior forward Trent Brown was named to the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association’s academic all-state first team released Monday.
    Fifty-seven seniors—29 boys and 28 girls—were chosen for the first team. Another 146 boys and 148 girls received honorable mention.
    To be eligible for the team players had to have a 3.5 grade-point average or higher on a 4.0 scale, a class rank in the upper 25 percent of their class, and an SAT score of at least 1,500 or an ACT score of 23.

    CANNELTON—Cannelton’s baseball team has a lot of unproven pitchers and hitters, but “our defense should be pretty good,” said Coach Mike Garrett.
    Larry Holman, who went 1-6 for the 2-16 Bulldogs last year, is the only returnee who saw significant mound action for the Bulldogs last year.
    He will be joined in the starting rotation by Drake Duke, a transfer from Tell City, and freshman Bryce Garrett.
