  • Rockport team to play in...

    JASPER - Rockport American Legion Post 254 Coach Jim Haaff has plenty to smile about after winning his 33rd sectional title. Rockport won all three sectional games at Jasper and were crowned champions Sunday.

    Post 254 started out full throttle Thursday playing Jasper. Logan Mohr took the mound and at that point had a 5-0 season pitching record. Mohr allowed two hits and struck out nine batters in seven innings.

  • Budweiser Clydesdales coming to...

    TELL CITY - The Budweiser Clydesdales will visit Tell City late this month, providing a thrilling start to this year's 51st Schweizer Fest.

    The famous horses and the early 1900s beer wagon they pull will arrive in City Hall Park around 11 a.m. Friday, July 31, and will travel the streets around the park from noon to 2 p.m.

    The visit is sponsored by Schweizer Fest Inc. and Hedinger Beverage Co. of Jasper.

    In addition to the Clydesdales, NASCAR fans can view driver Kasey Kahne's car. Kahne drives the No. 9 Budweiser Dodge car.

  • Smitty's rallies to win...

    TELL CITY - Smitty's Memorial Team pounded out 22 hits to beat Tri-State Service and Maintenance 14-9 Tuesday to win the Tell City Women's Softball League's regular-season title.

    Smitty's finished the season 8-0. Tri-State finished second at 6-2 but had a chance to tie Smitty's for the title going into their final game.

    Tri-State led 5-2 after four innings on the strength of a five-run second inning.

    A triple to deep left-center field by Misty Park, a single by Theresa Lain, three walks and two errors produced those runs.

  • Zuelly, Benningfield help...

    ROCKPORT - Tell City's Ryan Zuelly and Trent Benningfield have helped Rockport's American Legion baseball team to a 20-plus game winning streak.

    Zuelly, a 2008 Tell City graduate, was third on Rockport's team in hitting with a .448 batting average going into Thursday's first-round sectional game with Jasper.

    He was also third on the team in RBIs with 31 and tied for third in home runs with three. He had five doubles and 34 runs scored.

    He plays first base, outfield or designated hitter for Post 254.

  • Perry Countians place in state...

    EVANSVILLE - Tell City had two third-place entries and one fourth place in the United States Bowling Congress' state youth tourney held each weekend Feb. 21-May 3.

    More than 50 youth bowlers from Tell City Bowling Center participated.

    Devin McDaniel and Will Roberts placed third among 190 entries in Division 3 doubles.

    Brent Woods and Justin Peter took third among 159 teams in Division 8 doubles. Amber Schmidt and Jennifer Cecil placed fourth in the same division.

  • Tell City 12-year-olds third in...

    VINCENNES—Strong pitching by C.J. Rowe and power hitting by Spenser Beard helped Tell City place third in the age-12 Cal Ripken Baseball Southern State tourney last weekend.

    Tell City went 4-2 in the double-elimination tourney despite starting it with a 6-3 first-round loss to Avon in extra innings Friday.

    Beard hit a double and a single in that game. Damian Harney and Mason Waninger each added two singles.

    Rowe pitched the first six innings, striking out seven, walking none, and giving up only two runs.

  • 13-year-olds defeat Newburgh but...

    HAUBSTADT—Tell City had 12 hits as it beat the Newburgh Nightmares 11-4 in the first round of the age-13 Babe Ruth baseball district tourney last Thursday.

    Brennan Malone went 3 for 4. Cody Osborne hit a double and a single and Dakota Braunecker also had two hits.

    Malone, Osborne and Braunecker each drove in two runs.

    Drew Mowery pitched a complete game for the win. He gave up six hits and three walks and struck out eight.

  • 14-year-olds fall to Vincennes,...

    TELL CITY—A lack of hitting and some errors hurt Tell City’s age-14 Babe Ruth baseball all-stars as they lost the first two games of their double-elimination tourney last weekend.

    Hunter Herzog hit a double for Tell City’s only hit in a 13-2 first-round loss to South Gibson Friday.

    Brian Arnold pitched the first two innings for Tell City to take the loss and Larry Holman pitched the last three innings.

    Herzog hit a double and a single in Tell City’s next game but the local team lost to Vincennes 14-7.

  • Shorthanded 15-year-olds lose to...

    EVANSVILLE—Playing most of the tourney with eight players, Tell City lost its first two games in the age-15 Babe Ruth baseball district tourney last weekend.

    Vanderburgh County had 14 hits and took advantage of six Tell City errors to beat Tell City 12-5 in the first round Friday.

    Jessie Lawalin pitched a complete game for Tell City and did not walk a batter. He struck out three.

    “He really pitched well,” said Tell City Manager Barry LaGrange. “But they finally started hitting some gaps.”
