TELL CITY—Hot shooting by Hilarie Hahus in the last 10 1/2 minutes helped Perry Central pull away from Tell City 48-33 in the first game of the PSC Holiday Tip-off girls basketball tourney Saturday.

Both teams were cold in the first half: Tell City was 4 for 22 from the field and Perry Central was 7 for 21 with 13 turnovers.

Tell City still trailed by only two points, 26-24, after Ashley Fella hit a 12-foot baseline jumper with 21⁄2 minutes left in the third quarter.

  • PSC Holiday Classic features 2...

TELL CITY—Perry Central returns to defend its title but the fifth annual PSC Holiday Classic boys basketball tourney will feature two new teams.

Tecumseh and North Harrison have dropped out of the eight-team tourney. They have been replaced by Northeast Dubois and Owensboro Catholic.

Perry Central beat Boonville 83-77 in a classic triple-overtime game for the title last year. But those two will meet in a first-round game this year at Tell City Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

Boonville has been moved to the Tell City bracket this year, replacing North Harrison.

  • Test your knowledge with this...

Occasional trivia-quiz columns always seem to be popular with readers. And since nothing has been scheduled on the Perry County sports scene the last six days, this seems like a good time to do one.

I have done a few in the past based on the “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” television game show’s format. But I’m not going to follow that format this time for three reasons:

    1. The show, now in syndication, is not as big a hit as it once was.

  • Patriots hold off PC for PSC...

TELL CITY—Perry Central could not overcome a slow start and lost to Heritage Hills 41-27 in the championship game of the PSC Holiday Tip-off girls basketball tourney Monday.

Each team went 2-0 Saturday in the four-team, round-robin tourney, setting this up as the game for the title.

The Commodores’ game plan  was to be patient and work for good shots. But they hit only 28.9 percent from the field.

“We didn’t shoot well again and I don’t know why, because we got pretty good shots,” said Perry Central Coach Bill Dickerson.

  • Rebels, Patriots beat Tell City...

TELL CITY—Cold shooting and turnovers contributed to Tell City’s losses to the two Spencer County teams in the PSC Holiday Tip-off girls basketball tourney Saturday and Monday.

The Marksmen hit 26.5 percent from the field and committed 27 turnovers in a 48-42 loss to South Spencer Monday in their final game of the four-team, round-robin tourney.

  • Wagner wins four events as Tell...

TELL CITY—Amanda Wagner won two individual events and two relays to lead Tell City to third place in the nine-team Wildcat Invitational girls swim meet Saturday.

Wagner won the 100-yard freestyle in 58.03 seconds and the 100 breaststroke in 1:13.11.

She teamed with Chelsea Malone, Erika Hauenstein and C.J. Fentress to win the 200 medley relay in 1:59.66.

Those same four girls won the 200 free relay in 1:48.06.

Malone placed second in the 50 free in 26.33.

  • Marksmen 2-7 at Harrison

EVANSVILLE—Dylan Froehlich went 9-0 but only two other Tell City wrestlers had winning records as the Marksmen went 2-7 in Harrison’s 10-team round-robin tourney Friday and Saturday.

Tell City beat Forest Park 42-30 and South Spencer 42-36.

But the Marksmen lost to Union County 50-26, Southridge 52-21, Evansville Memorial 58-12, Heritage Hills 60-15, Trinity 42-27, Harrison 54-30, and Reitz 69-12.

“We just didn’t wrestle very well,” said Tell City Coach Joe Litherland.

  • Tell City wins JV tourney

REO—Dayne Seibert hit a key three-point shot in the second overtime  as Tell City beat Heritage Hills 45-44 to win a junior varsity basketball tourney Saturday.

Seibert’s three-pointer gave Tell City the lead for good.

After Heritage Hills missed a jump shot, Tell City’s Greg Hollinden grabbed the rebound and was fouled with two seconds left.

He missed the first of two shots and Heritage Hills called a timeout to set up a last-second play.

  • Rogier propels PC past Springs...

FRENCH LICK—Perry Central used defensive pressure in the second half to defeat Springs Valley 51-48 in overtime in PLAC boys basketball Friday.

The Commodores overcame a 10-point deficit, 41-31 with 4:07 left in regulation, using a full-court press and a half-court trap to bottle up the Blackhawk offense.

Perry Central Coach Matt Carter said, “We forced some quick shots and traveling (violations) that we were able to capitalize on and tightened things up.”

The Commodores outscored Springs Valley 13-3 over the last 4:00 of regulation.
