    ROCKPORT – Three outs from a regional title, the Rockport Senior Legion baseball team imploded Sunday, as Princeton erupted for six ninth-inning runs to earn a 9-5 win in the tourney’s championship game.

  • Tell City Tornadoes place 2nd at...

    JASPER – The Tell City Tornadoes compiled a .308 team batting average to place second in the Summer Splash age-16-and-under girls fastpitch softball tourney last weekend.

    The Tornadoes went 3-2 in the six-team tourney, which included teams from three states.

    In pool play Saturday, they beat the Vermillion County Chaos of Danville, Ill., 9-0 and lost to the Centralia, Ill., Supersonics 6-3.

    3-on-3 basketball tourney Aug. 11

    TELL CITY—The Schweizer Fest three-on-three basketball tourney will be held at Bryan Taylor Arena 9 a.m. Aug. 11.
    Entry fee is $25 per team and teams may have three or four people. All teams must pre-register. Registration forms are available at the Schweizer Fest Web site. Call 547-4154 for details.

  • Rockport wins Friday in regional...

    ROCKPORT—Jared Lauer singled and scored the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning, helping Rockport edge Newburgh 4-3 in the opening round of the Legion Regional Friday.

    With two on and no one out in the top of the 10th, Damon Wahl bunted back to Newburgh pitcher Jon Smith. Attempting to put out the lead runner, Smith threw high and into left field, allowing Lauer to score the winning run.

    Newburgh was able to extend the game via a controversial call in the bottom of the eighth.

  • Schaad shines in showcase

    LOUISVILLE, Ky.— Perry Central’s Dacota Schaad impressed college basketball coaches and scouts last weekend at the Louisville Blue Chip Early Exposure Showcase.

    Schaad played for the Evansville Hornets, who went 5-1 to place second. They lost the final game to the Rocket City Blackhawks from Huntsville, Ala., 59-56.

  • Patrick Auto shuts out Southern...

    TELL CITY—Tretter Lyons and Travis Burchett each drove in three runs as Patrick Auto shut out Southern Indiana Power 10-0 to win Tell City’s age-11-12 Cal Ripken League baseball playoff tourney July 11.

    Burchett also pitched a one-hitter for the win in the four-inning game. He struck out nine and walked three.

    Cameron Kessinger pitched the first 21⁄3 innings for Southern Indiana Power to take the loss. He gave up seven runs on five hits and four walks and struck out two. Two of the runs were unearned.

  • Rockport places 2nd in Boonville...

    BOONVILLE—Rockport’s American Legion baseball team left the tying run at third base in the seventh and eighth innings of a 5-3 loss to Princeton in the championship game of the Boonville sectional Sunday.

    Despite the loss, Jenkins Post 254 qualified for this weekend’s regional at Joe Hargis Field, as the sectional’s top two teams advanced.

    Rockport got off to a smashing start in round one last Thursday, batting around in five of seven at-bats to rout Boonville 30-4.
