  • Cannelton blasts Rock Creek 61-35

    SELLERSBURG—Mikah Hemmings had 35 points, nine steals, six rebounds and two assists as Cannelton trounced Rock Creek 61-35 in girls basketball Friday.
    Hemmings hit 11 of 30 from the field, including 3 of 10 from three-point range, and 10 of 11 free throws.
    Allicyn Garrett added 18 points, a team-high nine rebounds, and three steals.
    “We shot the ball pretty well,” said Cannelton Coach Mike Garrett. “We worked the ball a little bit and took open shots and hit some shots today.”

  • No. 1 Mater Dei defeats Tell City

    TELL CITY—Tell City trailed by only 10 points early in the third quarter, but five consecutive turnovers ended the Marksmen’s hopes of upsetting Mater Dei in girls basketball Thursday.
    Mater Dei, the Class 2A defending state champion and ranked No. 1 again this year, scored eight points off the turnovers and beat the Marksmen 61-36.
    “We had too many turnovers (24)—that’s for sure,” said Tell City Coach John Lyons. “And our turnovers turned straight into layups at the other end.

  • Lanesville bests Cannelton

    CANNELTON—Cannelton hit only 8 of 25 from the field and committed 16 turnovers in the second half of a 77-60 boys basketball loss to Lanesville Thursday.
    Cannelton hit 13 of 26 from the field in the first half, including 5 of 8 from three-point range, to take a 40-38 lead.
    Brandon Cook scored 24 points that half on 7 of 14 field-goal shooting (3 of 5 on three-pointers) and 7 of 12 free throws. He also had nice assists for layups by Elijah Littles and Hunter Herzog.

  • TC 1-8 in Harrison tourney

    EVANSVILLE—Aubrey Craig went 7-2 but Tell City went 1-8 in Harrison’s 10-team wrestling tourney last weekend.
    Tell City beat Forest Park 48-27 in its first match but lost the next eight.
    Craig pinned three opponents and raised his season record to 15-3 with eight pins in the 106-pound weight class.
    Cody Osborne (heavyweight) went 6-3 with three pins and Mason Waninger (113) and Jarrett Hawhee (132) each went 5-4.

  • Tell City girls 3rd at Jasper

    JASPER—Charissa Lahee placed in the top five in all four of her events to lead Tell City to third place in Jasper’s six-team girls swimming invitational Saturday.
    Tell City scored 315 points. Jasper won with 600.
    Lahee placed fifth in the 50-yard freestyle in 28.06 seconds and in the 100 free in 1:03.12.
    She teamed with Derrian Zabel, Bailey Powell and Loren Braunecker to place fourth in the 400 free relay in 4:25.14.
    Lahee, Kassi Peter, Powell and Braunecker placed fifth in the 200 free relay in 1:59.22.

  • Perry Central claims JV tourney...

    REO—Alton Cummings scored 15 points, including the winning free throws, as Perry Central beat South Spencer 50-48 to win a four-team JV boys basketball tourney Saturday.

  • TC boys outswim Raiders

    HUNTINGBURG—Trent Harding won two individual events as Tell City beat Southridge 96-50 in boys swimming last Thursday.
    Harding won the 500-yard freestyle in 6:27.69 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:17.42.
    Will Roberts, Hunter Sandage and Luke Thomas each won one individual race and two relays for the Marksmen.
    Roberts won the 100 butterfly in 1:17.75, Thomas the 200 free in 2:24.51, and Sandage the 50 free in 25.55 seconds.

  • West Washington runs to victory...

    CANNELTON—West Washington used a lot of fast breaks to outscore Cannelton 22-3 in the third quarter en route to a 60-30 girls basketball victory Saturday.
    Cannelton led 13-12 midway through the second quarter but scored only three points in the next 12 minutes.

  • Briggs’ shooting helps Tell City...

    LINCOLN CITY—Lacey Briggs scored 18 points, including four three-point baskets, as Tell City clubbed South Spencer 39-19 in the PSC Girls Holiday Tip-Off tourney Saturday evening.
    Tell City’s offense was sluggish in Saturday morning’s session as the Marksmen lost to Heritage Hills 34-24. The Marksmen did not score in the first quarter of that game.
    Briggs scored two field goals in the first quarter Saturday evening as Tell City jumped to a 6-4 lead over the Rebels.

    LINCOLN CITY—Ashley Graves had 32 points, 13 rebounds, three blocked shots and three steals as Perry Central beat South Spencer 63-42 in the first round of the PSC Holiday Tip-Off girls basketball tourney Saturday morning.
