  • Hair Razors defeats Swiss...

    TELL CITY - McKenzie Hayes singled home the tying and go-ahead runs in the sixth inning as Hair Razors beat Swiss Plywood 7-3 in Tell City age-13-16 girls softball Monday.

    Swiss led 3-2 going into the sixth inning but Hair Razors scored five unearned runs that inning on two hits, two walks and two errors.

    Hair Razors had five hits for the game, with five different batters each getting one single.

    Swiss had four hits, with Stephanie Posey getting a double and a single and Tory Coyle adding two singles. Posey drove in two runs.

  • Franzman Insurance only unbeaten...

    TELL CITY - Nathan Wood went 4 for 4 as Franzman Insurance beat Coca-Cola 12-0 last Tuesday to become the only remaining undefeated team in the Tell City Babe Ruth League.

    Lucas Bryant added two hits for Franzman's.

    Trent Benningfield and Jeff Braun combined to pitch a two-hitter for Franzman's.

    Dayne Seibert and Chris McDaniel had Coke's only hits.

    Franzman's also beat Kiwanis 16-3 last Thursday and had a 4-0 season record at the end of the week.

    Braun hit a double and two singles in that game. Benningfield and Trent Nelson each added two hits.

  • No TC players on All-PAC

    TELL CITY - No Tell City players were named to the All-Pocket Athletic Conference baseball team in voting by league coaches Monday.

    A former Tell City player, Gibson Southern catcher Mike Maddle, did make the 13-man honor squad.

    Maddle started at catcher last year as a freshman for the Marksmen before moving to Gibson County.

    Three Tell City players received honorable mention: Trent Gunn, Cody Pfeifer and Ryan Zuelly.

  • PC qualifies for regional

    JASPER - All four Perry Central scorers shot in the 80s as the Commodores placed third in the 14-team IHSAA boys golf sectional Saturday to qualify for the regional.

    Perry Central shot a 344, one stroke ahead of fourth-place Heritage Hills and three ahead of fifth-place Springs Valley.

    Tell City shot 391 to finish 12th.

    Jasper won with a 312 and Southridge was second at 335.

    The top three teams and the top three individuals not on those teams qualified for the regional, to be held today at 8 a.m. Perry County time at Country Oaks in Washington.

  • Huber places 3rd in state

    INDIANAPOLIS - Perry Central senior Nick Huber turned in the highest finish by any Perry Countian in 52 years as he placed third in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles at the IHSAA boys state track meet Saturday.

    Huber broke his own school record as he ran that race in 38.62 seconds.

    He did that despite running in the second of three heats. His fastest time of the season would have put him in the fastest heat, among the nine best seeds, but seeds were based on regional times, where Huber was still slowed slightly by an ankle injury.

  • Women's slowpitch players...

    Diane "Nuits" Nix caught for Smitty's team in the Tell City Women's Softball League for 11 years until a shoulder injury ended her career in 2001.

    During that time she was generally considered the best defensive catcher in the league. But she said Thursday she's glad she doesn't have to play there this season.

    What provoked that sentiment was the fact that women's slowpitch players will be allowed to steal bases this year for the first time.

  • Perry Central 5th in PLAC

    FRENCH LICK - Three players shot 87 or better as Perry Central finished fifth in the seven-team PLAC boys golf tourney Thursday.

    Crawford County won with 337 strokes.

    Host Springs Valley also shot 337 on the Ross course, but Crawford County had a better fifth-man score.

    Perry Central shot 353. "It's really a phenomenal score considering the difficulty of the course," said Perry Central Coach Bill Dickerson. "It's by far the most difficult course we've played.

    "It's a beautiful course, but it's longer than most others in Southern Indiana and its greens are fast."

  • Braves beat Bulldogs

    LYNNVILLE - Cannelton held Tecumseh pretty well in check after the first inning but lost 14-2 in the first round of the Class A baseball sectional Wednesday.

    The game had started in the rain last Monday morning and was suspended in the top of the first inning with Tecumseh leading 6-0 and the bases still loaded.

    The game was resumed from that point Wednesday afternoon.

    The Braves quickly added three more runs, as Bob Oeth hit a single to left. It got past the left fielder, allowing three runs to score and Oeth to make it all the way to third base.

  • Mater Dei pulls away from TC

    ROCKPORT - Mater Dei used a seven-run sixth inning to finish off Tell City 11-1 in the Class 2A baseball sectional Wednesday.

    The Marksmen trailed only 4-1 entering the bottom of the sixth inning. And Tell City pitcher Eric Henrickson struck out the first batter of that inning, giving him three strikeouts in his last four batters faced.

    But that would be the last out he and the Marksmen got.

    A dropped fly ball and a walk followed, and two passed balls produced a run.

    A hit batsman and an infield single produced another run.
