  • All-stars lose to Newburgh

    POSEYVILLE - Tell City 14-year-old Babe Ruth all-stars held their Newburgh opponents scoreless in the first inning of a district-tournament game Saturday in Poseyville, but their opponents "came back and started hitting in the second," and went on to win the game 16-6, according to Tell City Coach John Nelson.

    The loss eliminated Tell City from the tourney.

    Trent Nelson got a single in the first inning, then stole second, third and home to put Tell City up 1-0 in the first inning. Rain delayed the second inning, which saw Newburgh score nine runs.

  • Tell City 15-year-olds split...

    JASPER - Tell City got a chance to avenge their 7-0 loss to Newburgh Sunday, only to come up short in the Monday championship game against them.

    Tell City's age-15 Babe Ruth all-stars team lost 7-3 Monday during the district tourney

    Coach Brad Stiles said the team didn't play well the first two innings and couldn't come back after Newburgh had scored.

    Trent Benningfield hit 2-for-4 and Trent Gunn hit 1-for-4 during the game. Runs were made by Benningfield, Ethan Herzog and Sean Flannagan.

  • Team earns ticket to regional...

    NEWBURGH - Even though Tell City lost the age 13 Babe Ruth All-Star Tourney, they will advance to the Southwind Regional Tourney.

    In Game 3 of the tourney, Tell City beat Newburgh 15-8, allowing them to play against the District 6 winners in the regional tourney Friday at 5:30 p.m. in Bloomington.

  • Hair Razors rallies to win 13-16...

    TELL CITY - Hair Razors rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat Sports Acceleration 8-7 to win Tell City's age-13-16 girls softball league playoff tourney Monday.

    Payton Reed singled home the tying runs.

    McKenzie Hayes' fielder's choice grounder to the right side then drove in the winning run from third base.

    Catelyn Zuelly hit two doubles in the game for Hair Razors.

    Jaci Garrett added a double and a single, Cortni Strobel had two singles, and Hayes hit a double.

  • Babe Ruth all-stars announced

    TELL CITY - Regular-season champion Franzman Insurance placed three players each on Tell City's age-15 and age-14 Babe Ruth all-star teams announced Wednesday.

    Coca-Cola also had three players on the age-15 team.

    Kiwanis led the age-13 team with four selections while Coke and William Tell Woodcrafters each had three on it.

    The all-star teams will play in district tourneys this weekend.

    The age-15 all-stars will open district play at Jasper against the South Gibson vs. Washington winner Friday at 7:30 p.m., Perry County time.

  • Shorthanded Thomas Glass wins

    Dylan Hedinger of Thomas Glass & More dives into third with a stolen base before Kiwanis third baseman Logan Bolin can put the tag on him in Monday's Tell City Babe Ruth League baseball playoff tourney game. Despite playing with just eight players, including two pool players, Thomas Glass won the game 4-3 as pool player Ryan LaGrange hit a home run over the left-field fence with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning. The double-elimination tourney continues through Saturday or possibly Monday at Kiwanis Park.

  • TC 10-year-olds go 1-2 at...

    NEWBURGH - Trent Rainey hit four home runs in three games as Tell City's age-10 baseball all-stars went 1-2 in a 10-and-under baseball tourney Saturday.

    Tell City beat Highland of Evansville 8-2 and lost to Southridge 7-4 in pool games.

    Rainey went 2 for 2 with a grand slam against Highland. Gant Miller added a double and a single.

    Rainey pitched two innings, Reed Goffinet pitched three innings, and Nick Pierrard pitched one that game (pitchers were limited to six innings for the day). Rainey and Goffinet each struck out four.

  • Tell City 8-year-olds 2nd at...

    BIRDSEYE - Katie Goffinet hit .941 to lead Tell City's age-8 girls softball all-stars to second place in Pine Ridge's tourney last weekend.

    Tell City opened the six-team tourney with two pool games, beating Ireland 13-0 but losing to North Spencer 10-9.

    Goffinet, Kaydi Braunecker, Natalie Sanders and Brianna Bryant each went 3 for 3 against Ireland.

    Goffinet and Savannah Alvey each went 3 for 3 against North Spencer.

  • Perry Central splits twinbill

    LEOPOLD - Perry Central drew numerous walks to beat Orleans 13-10 in the second game of a junior high girls softball doubleheader Friday.

    The Commodores scored 11 runs in the first inning despite having only two hits that inning, singles by Hannah Harpenau and Alex Lewis.

    Orleans committed one error, the only one it made for the game, in that inning. The rest of the runners reached base via walks.

    Perry Central had four hits in the game, which lasted only three innings due to the time limit.

  • Former News publisher was one of...

    I was shocked while on vacation last week when Perry County News Editor Vince Luecke called to tell me that Ron Filkins, one of our former publishers, had died of an apparent heart attack at age 57.

    We have had nine publishers (the title was general manager when I started here) in my 30 years at the News. Ron served six years in that position, 1996-2002, the second longest tenure (and just months short of the longest) since Edgar Schergens sold the News in 1972.
