  • County health nurse offers school...

    Summer break is rapidly coming to an end for all local students. Perry County students entering grades 6 through 12 in August will have to meet new immunization requirements or they could be prevented from attending school.

    The new 2010-11 school immunization requirements state that all students must have an immunization record that documents one tetanus, diphtheria, accelular pertussis vaccine, meningococcal conjugate vaccine and two varicella (chicken pox) vaccines.

    Who drums for grouse, listens to...

    When hiking your favorite trail in the Hoosier National Forest, have you ever noticed it was no longer muddy, or perhaps a portion of the trail had been relocated? How did the Hoosier staff know to correct the problem? It was a result of trail monitoring. Farther down the trail you cross an area and remember it had been part of a prescribed burn last year. In past years you did not notice all the different blooming flowers that you see now. These new flowers are the result of opening up the forest canopy and allowing more sunlight to reach the ground.

    During the course of its investigation into the current Gulf of Mexico oil spill, The Associated Press was given information from the then-office of Mineral Management Services that was not making a lot of sense.

    A summer for big travels

    In case you haven't noticed, it's been the summer for traveling the country in adventuresome ways and Perry County has been a stopping-off point for free-spirited men and women swimming, horseback riding and even walking across some or all of the nation.

    A group of people waterskiing passed by Thursday and Mimi Hughes, a Tennessee woman swimming the Ohio River to raise awareness about the importance of educating girls, passed by just before Independence Day.

  • 'Inception' is best of...

    "Inception" is easily my most anticipated movie so far this year.

    It's not because I loved the previews for it or I read some interviews or I heard the buzz about it. It's because it's directed by Christopher Nolan ("Memento," "The Dark Knight"), it has an amazing cast and it is based on an original script. That last one is almost unheard of in summer blockbuster land these days.

  • New chapter in local history will...

    Wednesday marks the opening day for eligible residents to file for the three seats on the Tell City-Troy Township School Board that will become vacant Jan. 1. Candidates will appear on the November ballot and citizens will vote on whom they would like to see on the board. This will mark a change approved by voters from an appointed board to one they select.

  • On Iran, action, not words

    Three American presidents - including Barack Obama - have declared that a nuclear weapons-capable Iran is "unacceptable." But in order to give real meaning to that declaration we must do whatever is necessary to prevent Iran from gaining this unacceptably dangerous capability.

    Make no mistake; this has reached crisis levels and is now the most urgent national security issue America confronts today.

    We moved back to Perry County after retiring in the summer of 2008. Since then, we have been asked, "Why did you move back to Perry County when there is so much more to do in Orange County, California?"

  • Why do I love soccer?

    My family members, friends and even my co-workers can attest to my undying and, I'll admit, sometimes obsessive love of soccer.

    Or football, as I like to call it. And trust me, I've tried to get others to, as well.

    World Cup ended recently and with it an absolutely grueling and fantastic month in which I waited patiently for scores during work, watched two of my favorite teams - USA and Portugal - leave after the round of 16 and ventured all the way to Bloomington just to watch a game with my best friend at a local bar.

  • 'Karate Kid' doesn't...

    I'll admit, I planned on holding out until the DVD came out to watch "The Karate Kid," but my niece wanted to watch it and I can't tell my niece "no" if she wants to watch a movie.

    So I watched it ... and it's not all that bad.

    Make no mistakes, though, if you watch "The Karate Kid," you should watch the one from the 80s. However, there are certainly worse movies to watch in theaters right now.

  • State officials should find useful...

    Maybe we should rethink our practice of calling the people we send to Indianapolis "lawmakers."

    If you present a problem to a surgeon, you're likely to get a solution involving a scalpel. A carpenter might suggest a hammer. A legislator enacts a law.

    The state's General Assembly passed a law in 2009 that resulted in a study that resulted in a news release Wednesday from the state's Education Department. It suggested schools and universities could save money by using the state-employees health-insurance plan.

    Soccer, gin and gaucho swagger

    I'm not much of a soccer fan and while the digital video recorder on my television captured some of the games of the World Cup, I have yet to find the time to watch them.

    I did, however, take keen interest in Tuesday's semifinals game between Netherlands and Uruguay. I've repeatedly visited both nations and feel an affinity for the people and their cultures, which both contrast and conform to one another.

  • Nothing redeeming about Shyamalan...

    M. Night Shyamalan has outdone himself yet again ... but not in a good way.

    I actually enjoyed his films up until "The Village," which had its moments but was ultimately a letdown. Then "The Lady in the Water" came out and I couldn't gain interest in it whatsoever.

    He hit his low spot with "The Happening," but even that movie is redeeming in you can make fun of it to get some enjoyment.

    Now, he has unleashed "The Last Airbender," a film not even worth making fun of.

  • Declaration of Independence:...

    All of us should take a short break from the fireworks and festivities of the Independence Day holiday to do one important thing: read the Declaration of Independence.

    Many of us haven't given the document a glance since high school civics class. Some may never have read the words signed 234 years ago. We know the names of the men who signed the document - Jefferson, Franklin and Hancock - but some have never read their words. Now's the time.

  • Get ready for 4-H fair fun

    It's almost fair time. That means it's time to see what some of the best, brightest and hardest working youth in the community have been doing. Hundreds of youth from across Perry County and surrounding areas will be exhibiting projects. It's a great experience to see what they have learned.

    Fair is a time to show just a portion of what 4-H members do but we know that 4-H is much more then the fair. What is 4-H?

  • New laws take effect July 1

    On the legislative calendar, the next big date is today.

    That's when most of the new laws passed earlier this year by the Indiana General Assembly take effect.

    In this report, I want to highlight some of the measures that just became law.

    When we debated ways to create more jobs for Hoosiers, one emphasis was assistance for Indiana's small businesses, which already employ 1.3 million people in our state. One way to help will come from the position of small business ombudsman, which became part of the Indiana Economic Development Corp. July 1.

  • Alcoa workers made right move in...

    Many Perry and Spencer Countians are among the 1,500 Local 104 United Steelworkers members who work at Alcoa's Warrick County plant, so the union's vote Thursday to accept a new four-year contract with the company was good news for our local economy.

  • Community's response to Gulf...

    A few weeks ago I stumbled across an article about one organization's efforts to assist in the Gulf oil spill cleanup.

    The organization, Matter of Trust, is an ecological public charity that was asking for the public's help in collecting human and animal hair (dog, cat, alpaca, sheep) along with nylons to make oil booms.

    Feeling helpless here in southern Indiana, I thought it would be a good way for our community to get involved with their cause.

    I moved to Perry County almost nine years ago to work for the Hoosier National Forest in Tell City. I came from a national forest in Arizona near Phoenix that was very busy.

  • The long days of summer

    Last Monday was the longest day of the year, meaning the summer solstice had arrived and the sun was as high in the sky as it could go. I spent Monday slaving behind my desk but I did my best the previous Saturday and Sunday to take advantage of just about every minute of daylight. Come nightfall Sunday, my bones ached but I felt a bit of satisfaction.
