    Pay lake becoming disabled-vets...

    DERBY - "I sell the daylights out of them," Jeff Piper said of birdhouses built from recycled fencing materials and license plates.

    The owner of Rainbow Pay Lake near Derby boasted that he's helping to keep hundreds of pounds of materials out of landfills. Their reuse serves a higher purpose he hopes to expand upon, however. He has several of the finished products on display at the lake, and they're also available through his Web site, www.ovrthere.com, where his threefold mission is described:

    Country store marks 50 years in...

    LEOPOLD - Ernest and Myrtle Guillaume hung their family name in front of Leopold's country store 50 years ago. Their two daughters, working in the same store, are marking the anniversary this week by welcoming customers and reminiscing about five decades of tending to the needs of the community.

  • It's 4-H fair time!

    PERRY COUNTY - Twelve Perry County 4-H members have reached their 10th and final year in 4-H. Ten-year members include Alexandria Bashor, Samson Benjamin, Leighsa Carter, Krista Evrard, Kayla Hagedorn, Katie Hess, Ryan Kessens, Jake Paulin, Abigail Preher, April Sherman, Derek Suhrheinrich and Emily Tempel.

    Bashor is a member of the Branchville Bunch 4-H Club and daughter of Dwaine and Martha Bashor. A Perry Central High School graduate, she will attend Purdue University to study biology with plans to go to veterinary school.

    King, queen competition set for...

    PERRY COUNTY - The Perry County 4-H Fair will kickoff Monday with the choosing of the fair's king and queen. Starting at 6:30 p.m. at the fairgrounds, the public can also bid on food items and baskets and watch the fashion review during breaks in the king and queen competition.

    Preston family thanks rescuers

    HAWESVILLE, Ky. - Two angels on his shoulders and those in the form of emergency medical technicians, police officers, firefighters and more are who Chad Preston and his family credit with saving his life.

    On April 20, Preston and his brother, Steve, were involved in a four-vehicle accident at the intersection of Indiana 66 and Washington streets in Tell City. Two people died in the collision.

  • Summer Math Camp visits Tell City...

    CANNELTON - Cannelton students participating in a Summer Math Camp visited Fifth Third Bank in Tell City June 17.

    “Fifth Third Bank was very kind and helpful in assisting me in making a real life connection to math in our every day lives,” said teacher Jamie Powers. “I wanted students to see why and how our classroom math education is important. That math isn’t just numbers but a lifelong skill they will use in their future as well.”

    TELL CITY — Fourteen performers advanced from Sunday's second round of Shoot for the Stars and will perform July 19 in City Hall Park.

    Advancing to the third round are Ronald Riley, Leah Lasher, Dillon McKinney, Darian Oliva, Kensey Estes, Brittany Patterson, David McKinney, Euriah Bryant, Glenn Cronin, Clint Buechler, Jessica York, Kayla Kinnaird, Amber Wilbur and Heather Young.

    Also performing July 19  as part of Tell City's Music in the Park series will be Abby Jenkins and the musical group Naked.

    Perry County Habitat for Humanity and the Tell City-Troy Township School Corp.'s building trades  program have formed a collaborative partnership over the past school year. Supporters point to the benefits for everyone: students, the community and a partner family who will move into the new house later this year.

    Kids have more fun in 3 days than...

    CANNELTON - If a youngster participating in Camp with a Cop last week was bored, he or she just wasn't paying attention.

    Their schedule for Thursday alone included scuba diving and swimming at the Tell City High School pool, field games featuring an obstacle course, a dunking booth, water balloons, fishing, rock-climbing and rappelling, food donated by area pizzerias and a memorial service for the late Kenny Kellems.

    TELL CITY - Most parents expect their children to graduate from high school. Elizabeth "Libby" Galloway wasn't sure, for a time, if daughter Beyonka, would live long enough.

    "Every one of my family members died of cancer," Libby said May 26, "so I associated it with death."

    Beyonka didn't just graduate with the Tell City High School Class of 2009. She did it in style, as a 21st century scholar.

    GULFPORT, Miss. - Eric Faulkenberg lives up to the Latin phrase, "Non sibi, sed patriae," which means "not for self, but for country."

    As a petty officer third class in the U.S. Navy, he served for seven months in Kuwait in 2008 and will be deployed to Afghanistan in August. But while he selflessly serves his country, Faulkenberg has served his countrymen in another way.
