October has been designated Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Domestic Violence Awareness Month was first observed nationally in 1987. Domestic violence is a serious crime. It is no longer ignored or thought of as a "family matter" to be worked out at home. Domestic violence affects numerous families right here in Perry County.

TELL CITY - Voters in the Tell City-Troy Township school district will be asked Nov. 3 to decide whether Tell City High School will undergo further renovations costing up to $10 million. In preparation for that election, a school referendum committee has been sending out information about proposed construction.

In addition, an open house will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday at the high school, where student guides will show off recently completed work.

A recent Octoberfest gathering gave me the chance to dust off German-style dishes I don't prepare that often. Several visitors asked for a few of them. Here are a few, including a Reuben dip that  can easily be made in a slow cooker and is wonderful on crackers or with small cocktail bread.

1 can sauerkraut, drained

1 package dried corned beef, chopped

1⁄2 cup thousand-island salad dressing

8 oz. Swiss cheese, cubed

CANNELTON - The Ohio River became a real-life classroom last week for Indiana's next generation of conservation officers. This year's Department of Natural Resources Recruit Class learned about the Cannelton Locks and Dam and its role in Ohio River navigation.

For some of the 24,  Wednesday and Thursday's training marked their first visit to southern Indiana. Despite the sunny skies overhead, recruits had little time for sightseeing.

Local officers gathered last Monday at the Tell City Police Department's shooting range off of Indiana 66 for their annual firearms recertification. Above, Perry County Chief Deputy Lee Chestnut, who is a certified firearms instructor, tallies fellow Deputy Daymion Marsh's score. Officers fire their service weapons at varying distances and have to achieve scores of at least 80 percent of a maximum 240 points to obtain their recertification. Tell City and Cannelton officers, as well as sheriff's deputies, passed.

LEOPOLD - Zaeden Hillenbrand is a happy, active 8-year-old boy who loves to laugh. "He's a big goofy kid," said his father, Fred Hillenbrand.

This is a big difference from when doctors told Fred and his wife, Danielle, that Zaeden only had a 5 percent chance to survive, and if he did, his quality of life would be poor.

Thanks to research and funding by the March of Dimes, however, he survives.

"We owe them so much," said Danielle.

LEOPOLD – The 2009 Perry Central High School football Homecoming will be held Friday. The ceremony will be held at halftime of the Perry Central and West Washington game, which begins at 7 p.m.

Kelsie Bland of rural Tell City is the daughter of Melanie Robbins and Dan Zellers. Since being at Perry Central she has been involved in cheerleading, Natural Helpers, pep, key and German clubs, National Honor Society, Big Brothers-Big Sisters, Upward Bound and yearbook staff.

TELL CITY - Ronald Reagan's visit to Tell City's General Electric plant 13 years earlier may be better remembered in the annals of local history, but Sen. Ted Kennedy's barnstorming visit in 1968 left lasting memories for many who heard him speak at City Hall.

A U.S. senator since 1962, Kennedy, 77, died Tuesday and was buried Saturday.
