    Thanksgiving gospel concert Saturday

    TELL CITY – Continuing a tradition already several years old, First Christian Church in Troy will offer a gospel concert, "A Gospel Thanksgiving in Song," from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Tell City High School.

    Doors to the auditorium will open at 1:30. The concert is offered by the church at no cost, though a freewill offering will be collected.

    Performing will be the Woodsmen Quartet of Batesville, the Conquerors Quartet from Evansville and the southern Indiana-based SonShiners. Also on stage will be guest pianist-soloist Benjamin Morelock.

  • Holiday postmark ready for busy run

    The Santa Claus post office is offering a special "picture postmark" to cancel the postage stamps on holiday mail again this year.

    The post office is the only one in the world that has Santa's name and has offered the special "picture postmark" each holiday season since 1983. Each year's holiday postmark is designed by a local high-school art student as part of an annual contest.

    LOS ANGELES - USABookNews. com, an online magazine and review Web site for mainstream and independent publishing houses, announced the winners and finalists of the National Best Books 2009 Awards.

    More than 500 winners and finalists were announced in over 140 categories covering print and audio books. Awards were presented for titles published in 2009 and late 2008.

  • ‘Nunsense 2' opens...

    TELL CITY - The Epsilon Omega Chapter of Kappa Kappa Kappa Inc. will lift the curtain on its ninth theater production, "Nunsense 2: The Second Coming," today in Fellowship Hall at Evangelical United Church of Christ.

    Four shows are planned, beginning with this evening's 8 p.m. event. Shows Friday and Saturday evening begin at 6:30 p.m. and include dinner.

    A final production is set for 2 p.m. Sunday.

  • St. Paul Church celebrates 150 years

    Two men, the archbishop of Indianapolis and the next bishop of Cheyenne, Wyo., joined former pastors and native sons serving as priests in a church packed with parishioners Sunday in celebrating the 150th anniversary of the founding of St. Paul Catholic Church.

    Archbishop Daniel Buechlein OSB presided  at the 10 a.m. Mass with the Rev. Paul Etienne, the church's pastor, giving the homily.

  • New clapboard for historic 1892...

    DEXTER — Crossroads Church has drawn worshippers for more than a century. Now its exterior is getting a little tender loving care. The public can help support the effort through donations. Church member Linda Schraner said she and the congregation are working to raise the $8,000 needed to replace clapboard on the front and rear of the church.

    "It's thin and worn after 117 years," Schraner said this week.

  • Governor offers hero's salute...

    BRANCHVILLE — Mike Hubert, a Branchville Correctional Facility maintenance employee critically injured by three offenders who escaped in March, was presented a certificate of heroism Tuesday by Gov. Mitch Daniels.

    Hubert continues to recover from head injuries he suffered during the attack. The three men, who were later captured, struck him in the head with a blunt object before cutting through prison fences and fleeing.

    October has been designated Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Domestic Violence Awareness Month was first observed nationally in 1987. Domestic violence is a serious crime. It is no longer ignored or thought of as a "family matter" to be worked out at home. Domestic violence affects numerous families right here in Perry County.

  • Groups advocate school project

    TELL CITY - Voters in the Tell City-Troy Township school district will be asked Nov. 3 to decide whether Tell City High School will undergo further renovations costing up to $10 million. In preparation for that election, a school referendum committee has been sending out information about proposed construction.

    In addition, an open house will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday at the high school, where student guides will show off recently completed work.

  • Celebrate Oktoberfest!

    A recent Octoberfest gathering gave me the chance to dust off German-style dishes I don't prepare that often. Several visitors asked for a few of them. Here are a few, including a Reuben dip that  can easily be made in a slow cooker and is wonderful on crackers or with small cocktail bread.

    1 can sauerkraut, drained

    1 package dried corned beef, chopped

    1⁄2 cup thousand-island salad dressing

    8 oz. Swiss cheese, cubed
