    Perry Central student earns first...

    LEOPOLD – Brooke Lasher, a student at Perry Central Junior-Senior High School, was chosen as the seventh-grade winner in the annual River Sweep Poster Contest.

    Her poster was chosen from more than 2,000 entries from a six-state area. Lasher’s poster promotes participation in the annual Ohio River Sweep clean-up event, which is scheduled for June 15.
    Lasher will receive a $50 check and her poster will be posted on the event’s official Web site.
    She is the daughter of Wayne and Kara Lasher of St. Croix.

    Tell City’s queen and king

    Mackenzie Hayes and Seth Gehlhausen were crowned Tell City High School’s homecoming queen and king during ceremonies held Saturday.

  • Camping at Hemlock Cliffs trailhead...

    TELL CITY – Camping is no longer allowed at the trailhead and parking area at Hemlock Cliffs. It has long been a popular camping area but this has been the only trailhead on the Hoosier National Forest that allowed camping.  “Unfortunately, due to vandalism we have to prohibit camping in this parking area,” said Nancy Myers, recreation planner for the Tell City District.

    ST. MEINRAD – The Twin Lakes 4-H Club held its first meeting of the year Jan. 6, at the co-op in St. Meinrad.
    The meeting was called to order at 2 p.m. and pledges were recited.

    SANTA CLAUS – Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari officials expect to review a record number of job applications as they prepare to fill 2,100 seasonal positions in the coming months.
    “We’re looking for friendly and energetic individuals who enjoy working with people,” said Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari President Matt Eckert. “We need ride operators, lifeguards and sweepers, plus staff for admissions, shops, games and foods. We’re like a small city – we have quite a variety of jobs available.”

    TELL CITY – The Tell City High School Student Council will host the 2013 homecoming ceremony Saturday between the junior varsity and varsity basketball games against Gibson Southern.  The junior varsity game will begin at 6 p.m.

    JASPER – Blue Heron Winery of Cannelton will be the featured winery in the Krempp Gallery’s First Thursday Reception-Gallery Talk from 5 to 8 p.m. EST Feb. 7 at the Jasper Arts Center.
    Graphite artist Jessica Burke will be the featured artist with her work on display. Her drawings are a part of a new series that functions as a meditation on identity and gender politics as seen through the influence of iconic figures of popular culture.

  • St. Paul scrapbook gathering...

    TELL CITY – The St. Paul’s Scrapbooking Group will sponsor the second annual scrapbooking, card-making and general crafting crop, “Mission Possible” from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the parish hall.
    Cost is $25 per person and will include snacks, lunch, drinks, goodie bags and prizes. Friends registering together may enter the crop for only $45. All proceeds will support the St. Paul Catholic Church’s 2013 youth mission trip to Kenosha, Wis.

    UPDATE: Due to weather conditions, Perry Central Schools have moved its homecoming ceremonies to the game scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 26. The junior-varity game Saturday will begin at 5:30 p.m.

    The first baby of the year born at Perry County Memorial Hospital was Madilynn Marie Jane Parrott, daughter of Missy Parrott. She was born Friday, Jan. 4, delivered by Dr. Juan Cornejo. She weighed 6 pounds 12 ounces.

    PERRY COUNTY – The American Cancer Society is seeking volunteers to recruit fundraising teams, garner community support, coordinate logistics, plan entertainment and lend a hand to ensure the success of the 2013 Relay For Life of Perry County. Cancer survivors, caregiv-ers, community leaders and anyone wanting to make a difference are invited to participate.
    The first volunteer committee meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 21 at the United Methodist Church, 702 10th St., Tell City.

    PERRY COUNTY – It is time again for Perry County Public Library’s annual writing contest, Story Mania! The Teen Advisory Group announced this year’s contest would be short stories. Below are the guidelines for the contest. For more information, contact Lisa Hammack at the library at 547-2661.
    Guidelines for Story Mania! :
    Any teen in seventh to 12th grades who is a resident of Perry County
    Open subject, open genre, but no sexual content, profanity or extreme violence.
    Winning stories from previous years should not be resubmitted.

    Brandon Cook and Taylor Lawalin were crowned king and queen at the Cannelton High School homecoming ceremonies Jan. 4 before the varsity basketball game against Crothersville.
