  • Run For Your Mother registration...

    PERRY COUNTY – A fun run-walk will be held at 8 a.m. Mother’s Day, May 12 to raise funds for the Perry County Leadership Class of 2013 project. The event will begin in front of the new Tell City event center.
    The first 100 participants to sign up will receive T-shirts and gift bags. In order to receive the shirt, registration must be made by May 1. Cost is $20.
    Also, those who run will be listed in a special ad that will be published in the Perry County News after the event.

    Jones sisters donate hair

    Tinley, 9, Trista, 6, and Tila Jones, 4, cut and donated their hair to Pantene Beautiful Lengths. This is Tinley’s second donation. The girls are the daughters of Tim and Tabitha Jones of Rome  and all attend Perry Central Elementary.

    Branchville student serves as page...

     INDIANAPOLIS – State Senator Richard D. Young (D-Milltown) hosted a page from Branchville during the 2013 legislative session.

    Perry Central Junior-Senior High School student Sydney Goffinet, 16, served as a Senate page for Young Feb. 12. Goffinet met Young and gained a first-hand look at how the legislative process works during her time at the Statehouse.

  • Criss inducted as member of SAR

    PERRY COUNTY – Wesley Criss became a member of the Ohio Valley Sons of the American Revolution March 2. During the banquet, Criss also received the Sons of the American Revolution War Service Medal."

    He served in Afghanistan from July 2008, to July 2009. He received the U.S. Army Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service and Commitment to Excellence with four distinct achievements listed, plus his commanding officer’s hand-written comments that accompanied his commendation. He is the son of Molly Hall and Robert Criss.

    J-D hires new staffer

    The Journal-Democrat welcomes its newest employee, Don Steen.
    Steen, who was raised in Ferdinand and Tell City, is a 2006 graduate of Tell City High School. He earned his undergraduate degree in history at the University of Southern Indiana.

    While there, he worked as an intern at the university’s archive, instilling within him, he said, a deep appreciation for the hidden stories of communities across the nation.

  • Annual Charlie Tuggle ride April 27...

    PERRY COUNTY – The sixth annual Charlie Tuggle ride will be held April 27 at Braunie’s Bar in Tell City.
    Registration is from 9 to 11 a.m. All bikes will be out at 11 a.m. and all bikes should be back in at 4:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome to participate.
    Donations from the event will go to Shriners Children’s Hospital and Schreiber Family Charities. For more information, call John at 547-7917 or Joe at 547-8803. Rain date for the event is April 28.

    An academic assembly March 15 at William Tell Elementary featured guest speaker Levi Leffert, a senior at Heritage Hills High School, who spoke to the students about overcoming obstacles and living a life of confidence despite hardships.

  • Power of Youth grants still...

    PERRY COUNTY – The Perry County Power of Youth Council is still accepting grants applications and would like to invite those in Perry County working with youth or wellness programs to apply.
    Up to $5,000 will be awarded for programs that involve Perry County youth or a focus on wellness that benefits Perry County.

    Pioneer village supporters eye May...

    ROCKPORT – The “Village People,” volunteers and supporters of Lincoln Pioneer Village in Rockport, met recently to map out the special events taking place at the village in coming months.

    The first thing on the agenda is the  Abe Lincoln Golf Scramble Saturday at The Rustic golf course in Rockport.  The golf scramble fundraiser will begin at 10 a.m. A $45 entry fee includes lunch and a golf cart. Contact Charlie Fincey at the village at 649-9147 for more information.

    Post National American Miss Indiana...

    PERRY COUNTY – Jillian Grace Post, the 4-year-old daughter of Holly Bond, has been chosen as a state finalist in the National American Miss Indiana Pageant set for July 4 through July 7 at the Marriott Hotel in Indianapolis.

    The National American Miss pageants are held for girls 4 to 18 years of age and have five different age divisions. Post will participate in the 4 to 6 year olds Princess age division, along with other finalists from across Indiana.

    Shirley and Doyle Trenary are looking for the community’s help. Recently, the couple found several photos among the belongings of Slyvia Blum, Doyle’s aunt, who was formerly of Tell City. Blum was a previous owner of the bowling alley with her husband, Ed. The pictures, seen above, are from the 1930s or around that time and have very little to no information written on the back.

  • Birthday event for Rutherford

    TELL CITY – Friends, family and the public are invited to celebrate Mary Rutherford’s 80th birthday Wednesday.
    The event will be held from noon until 4 p.m. at the Tell City Community Center at 16th and Franklin streets. There will be a light lunch and dessert served. The celebration will be in an open-house style and all are welcome to attend.

    Charlotte Harpenau was the winner of the February quilt drawing, receiving this quilt, “Grandmother’s Flower Garden.” The top was donated by Marie Weisman and quilted by St. Paul Quilters.

    DAR essay winners honored at...

    TELL CITY – The Lafayette Springs Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution held its annual awards tea March 10 at the Tell City Junior-Senior High School. Each year, thousands of children across the United States participate in the American history, Christopher Columbus and good citizens essays sponsored by the DAR.

    With the encouragement from local teachers, parents and school systems, Perry County had more than 100 children participate in these essays this year.

  • Meeting Notes: Twin Lakes 4-H Club

    ST. MEINRAD – The Twin Lakes 4-H Club held its second meeting of the year Feb. 3 at the co-op in St. Meinrad.
    The meeting was called to order with pledges led by President Taylor Elmer and Vice-President Amber Lindauer. The minutes were read by the Secretary Matthew Schlachter. The treasurer’s report was given by Johnathon Davis and he stated that a cash award was received from the 4-H Council for the club winning third place in the window display contest. A health and safety report on winter weather was given by  

  • Documentary to screen at the Tell...

    TELL CITY – The Tell City Regional Arts Association will host a private screenings of the documentary, “They Wore the Red Suit,” at 7 p.m. April 6 at the Tell City Event Center located downtown.
    Tickets are $15 in advance. Seating is limited to 100 so be sure to purchase tickets early. Tickets can be purchase at the Perry County Chamber office, online at http://santamovietellcity.bpt.me or by calling 547-2833. Depending on availability, tickets may be purchased at the door for $20.

    Russian National Ballet to perform...

    JASPER – The Russian National Ballet will perform Swan Lake at the Jasper Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

    The Russian National Ballet Theatre was founded in Moscow during the transitional period of Perestroika in the late 1980s.  Many of the top dancers from across Russia, dedicated to the timeless tradition of classical Russian Ballet, joined the company. Today, the Russian National Ballet Theatre is its own institution, with more than 50 dancers of singular instruction and vast experience.

    Oakwood residents learn about...

    Residents and staff visited Krispy Kreme Doughnut Shop in Evansville on a recent outing to observe the production of making their doughnut.

    They each received a free warm doughnut to sample. The group also had lunch out before returning to the campus. Pictured enjoying the day are residents Ralph Malone and Sis Ingle.
