    PERRY COUNTY – October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and CVS Pharmacy and Perry County Memorial Hospital encourage local residents to attend a candlelight vigil at 6 p.m. Sept. 30 at City Hall Park, Main Street in Tell City. The park will be decorated with pink ribbons.

  • Avallone seeking donations for...

    TELL CITY – Miss Teen Schweizer Fest Jaylen Avallone will compete for the Indiana state pageant title in November.
    Donations of any amount would be greatly appreciated to help cover travel, food and hotel for the competition in Indianapolis.
    Checks or cash can be made out to Avallone and mailed or taken to Cinderella’s, 922 Main Street, Tell City, IN 47586. Donations must be received Oct. 1.

  • ‘Life in Cannelton’ amateur...

    CANNELTON – In honor of the upcoming 175th anniversary of Cannelton and the city’s annual Heritage Fest, a “Life in Cannelton” photography contest for amateur photographers will be held and photos displayed at the 175th Anniversary Headquarters, 512 Washington Street in Cannelton.
    Entries will be limited to three per person with no age limits. The contest is open to any amateur photographer who has not had monetary gain from taking photos on a part- or full-time basis.
    Photos must be matted with a standard matte board and ready to hang.

    Speer to represent state in Miss...

    EVANSTON – Marie Speer, 14, daughter of Darryl Adams and Tracy Speer-Horn of Evanston, has been selected to represent southern Indiana at the 2012 Miss American Junior Teen Pageant. She and four other girls from Indiana qualified to compete for the title of Miss American Junior Teen by earning places in the queen’s court at the annual state pageant.

  • Derby Fall Fest line-up announced...

    DERBY – The line up of events for the Oct. 6 Derby Fall Fest has been released.
    At 7:15 a.m. registration will begin for a 5K run-walk sponsored by Perry County Parks and Recreation Department. The run-walk will start at 8 a.m. and there will be T-shirts and prizes for all ages.
    A fishing derby at Rainbow Pay Lake will start at 8:30 a.m. It will be for ages 15 and under. Beginning at 11 a.m. and running until 3 p.m., visitors will be able to partake in food and drink booths.

  • Fall into winter story times begin...

    TELL CITY – Many fun-filled adventures await children this fall as the Fall Into Winter story time series, “Monkey See – Monday Do,” prepares to launch at both the Tell City Cannelton branches of the Perry County Public Library. Kids will enjoy weekly visits with a very loveable monkey, Curious George, along with monkey challenges, stories, crafts and songs that are sure to tickle the imaginations of little ones.

    TELL CITY – The Perry County Democrats will host their annual Jefferson-Jackson dinner Sept. 29 at American Legion Post 213 in Tell City.
    Cocktails will be served beginning at 6 p.m. and dinner will be served at 7. Cost is $20 per person.

    TELL CITY – A birthday party for Eulalia Flamion will be held Saturday to celebrate her 90th birthday.
    The open house will be from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Twilight Towers dining room.

    Biggest Loser contestants to visit...

    PERRY COUNTY – Roy and Chris Pickler are two contestants from the most recent season of the reality TV show “The Biggest Loser.” They are coming to Perry County on a nationwide tour to tell their story and help others make the difficult first steps to a life of health and fitness. The weekend events are in conjunction with the beginning of Everbody’s Fun and Fitness Center’s second session of the Biggest Loser contest.

    The Oil Township High School Class of 1948 held their 64th year class reunion at the Patio Steak house Aug. 10.

    Those pictured above are, in front from the left, Gloria (Falkenberg) Goffinet) Goldie (Cunningham) Edwards and Christine (Flanagan) Hawkins. In the back are Clyde Smith, Donald King, Charlie Weatherholt, Norma (Murphy) Foertsh, Jim Underhill and Faye (Goffinet) King. Those not able to attend were Mary Ellen (Falkenberg) Cassiday, Verna (Stephenson) Bell, Joe Lavin and Jerome Kelly.

  • Tobinsport Cemetery association...

    TOBINSPORT – The Tobinsport Cemetery Improvement and Maintenance Association held a special meeting to discuss interment fees and availability of burial plots. They established the following new guidelines.
    The burial plot fee will now be $425. This fee will be increased by $5 each year. This cost does not include the cost of opening and closing the grave.
    No one can reserve more than two plots at one time. Spots must be marked with a permanent marker. Plots that are reserved cannot be sold to another person.

  • Walker Cemetery fund report released

    BRANCHVILLE – A meeting with the trustees and others interested in the upkeep of the Walker Cemetery in Branchville was held Aug. 18 in the cemetery shelter house. Attending this meeting were Katherine Frakes, Polly Sprinkle, Mary Lois Ransom, Edna Taylor, Doug Galey, Anna Mae Riddle, Doreen Keilman, Bill Ransom, Roseanna Gibson and Wanda Mullins.
    Finances were the first topic discussed. The cemetery has a bank balance of $5,507.22. Donations and memorials since August, 2011 have been $1,417.14.

    Local teen named to represent...

    LAMAR – Jolene Gogel, 17, daughter of Richard Gogel and Devona Gogel of Lamar, has been selected to represent Indiana at the 2012 Miss American Teen Pageant.

    As the Indiana representative, Gogel will attend the national pageant for her age group in Florida and Disney World during the week of Thanksgiving. She will compete for the national pageant title of Miss American Teen and thousands of dollars in cash awards, prizes and scholarships.
