In 1962, Margaret (May) Schank won the prettiest dress for Cannelton’s 125th anniversary celebration of the Sisters of the Swish.

CANNELTON – To kick off Cannelton’s celebration of its 175th anniversary and annual Heritage Fest, the city will host a parade at 2 p.m. Sunday.
Line up will begin at 1 p.m. on Old Highway 237. Categories for the parade include commercial, band, civic and community. Certificates will be given to all participants and awards will be presented for first, second and third place in each category. For safety reasons, the community asks that candy be handed out to children, not thrown from floats.

Hunter Sandage and Kendall Bennett were crowned Tell City’s king and queen at homecoming ceremonies held Friday night before Tell City’s game against Southridge.

After seeing a broadcast about Lane Goodwin and his struggle with brain cancer, two Perry Central students, Kearstin Parker and Mackenzee Mattingly, kneeling in front, thought it would be a great idea to have everyone gather for a group photo to let his family know they are in their thoughts and prayers.

The students of Perry Central wanted to show their support for him by doing “Thumbs Up for Lane.” The good-luck sign is appearing in photos from around the nation going to the Prays for Lane Goodwin Facebook page.

PERRY COUNTY – Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2939 and the Ladies Auxiliary announce this year’s Patriots Pen essay-writing contest. Students in sixth through eighth grades are eligible for the contest. Home-schooled students are encouraged to enter as well.
This contest gives students an opportunity to write essays expressing their views on democracy with the prospect of winning U.S. savings bonds. The top national prize is a $10,000 U.S. savings bond.
This year’s topic is “What I Would Tell America’s Founding Fathers.”

TELL CITY – The Perry County Chamber of Commerce will conduct a ribbon cutting for the Tractor Supply at 11 a.m. Saturday to celebrate the store’s grand opening.  Tractor Supply is located at 375 Old Highway Road (next to Sonic) in Tell City.
Andy Pettit is the store manager. The store offers a full range of farm, ranch and home-improvement items. 

TELL CITY – The Tell City Senior High School student council will sponsor the 2012 football homecoming exercises, at 6 p.m. Sept. 21 at Legion Field before the Tell City v. Southridge football game.

Queen candidates:
Kendall Bennett is the daughter of Steve and Danielle Kirtley. She had participated in softball for four years, chorus for four years, pep club for four years, Advocates Club for three years and cheerleading for two years. She is undecided on her college choice, but she would like to major in special education.

The Tell City High School Class of 1957 held its 55-year reunion Aug. 10 at the Hoosier Heights Country Club.

TELL CITY – Miss Teen Schweizer Fest Jaylen Avallone will compete for the Indiana state pageant title in November.
Donations of any amount would be greatly appreciated to help cover travel, food and hotel for the competition in Indianapolis.
