Memorial Day Preparations

His baseball cap drawn down to block the sun, Corey Waninger marks the graves of deceased veterans with flags Tuesday as part of a annual project by Troop 192 Boy Scouts. The early-evening work in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Tell City was to be followed by a similar rite in Greenwood Cemetery Wednesday. Members of veterans groups will conduct graveside services across the county Sunday and Monday to mark the holiday. A joint American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars service is planned for noon Sunday in City Hall Park. 

Tell City robotics team places second in Evansville contest

TELL CITY – The Marksmen Robotics team shined in both technical and oral presentation skills in the VEX Robotics Competition in Evansville March 16.  The competition, sponsored by the Alcoa Foundation and Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana, was held on the college’s Southwest Campus. Broken into two separate, but equally scored sections of competition, Tell City’s team placed second overall out of the 25 southern Indiana teams competing.  

Homers propel Raiders past Perry Central

BRETZVILLE—Southridge scored five runs on two homers to beat Perry Central 6-4 in the first round of their Class 2A girls softball sectional Tuesday.
Perry Central led 2-1 going into the bottom of the fifth inning. But Kassidy Mundy singled to left field and with two outs Kendyl Dearing hit a high fly ball that barely cleared the left-field fence for a two-run homer.
Shelby Kippenbrock led off the next inning with a single up the middle and Kayley Main followed with a single to right.

Wildcats shut out Marksmen

BRETZVILLE—Laura Schmitt and Ashlyn Spahn combined to drive in seven runs as Mater Dei beat Tell City 11-0 in the first round of the Class 2A girls softball sectional Monday.
Mater Dei, ranked No. 2 in the state, pretty much put the game away with six runs in the first inning,
Schmitt hit a two-run double to deep center field that inning. Two batters later, Spahn hit a three-run homer over the left-field fence.

Peter qualifies for state meet

EVANSVILLE—Perry Central senior Cathryn Peter placed third in the 3200-meter run at the girls track regional Tuesday to qualify for the state meet.
Peter set a personal record as she ran the 3200 in 11:46.93, just two seconds from Rachael Rayford’s school record.
The top eight in each event scored but only the top three qualified for the state meet, which will be held 2 p.m. June 1 at Indiana University’s track. The 3200 will start at 7:15 p.m.
Peter, Megan Thomas, Grace James and Marie Schwartz placed fourth in the 3200 relay in 10:13.24.

No TC players make All-PAC

FERDINAND—No Tell City players were named to the All-PAC girls softball team elected by conference coaches Sunday.
Tell City senior first baseman-shortstop-pitcher McKenzie Hayes was the highest vote-getter among those receiving honorable mention as a utility player on the team.
Had she made the team, she would have joined Krista Blunk as the only Tell City girl to make all-conference in three sports in one school year.

Celebrate Better Hearing and Speech Month

TELL CITY – Since 1927, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association has celebrated Better Hearing and Speech Month each May to raise public awareness of speech and language disorders that affect 14 million Americans.
Speech and language disorders can take many forms and can limit academic achievement, social adjustment and career advancement. An individual may be born with a speech or language disorder or it may be caused by accidental injury or illness.

Golf scramble Saturday
ENGLISH – Karen’s Angels third annual golf scramble against cancer will be held May 11 at the old English Golf Course in English. There will be a shot-gun start at 8 a.m. EDT. The cost includes 18 holes of golf, cart rental and hamburgers.
