Emmons, Theis set school records as Perry Central romps to PLAC title

MITCHELL—Payton Emmons and Jillian Theis set school records as Perry Central cruised to the PLAC junior high girls track title Saturday.

Local residents graduate from University of Evansville

EVANSVILLE – The University of Evansville announced that multiple local students graduated during UE’s 155th commencement held May 4 at the Ford Center in downtown Evansville.
During the ceremony, the university awarded 595 degrees to 579 graduates – the largest graduating class in over a decade.

Kellems – Sillings

Felicia Kellems of Cannelton and Brandon Sillings of Leavenworth were united in marriage during an afternoon ceremony Saturday, May 11, 2013, in Fulda.

The bride is the daughter of Michele and Eddie Kellems of Cannelton. Mr. Sillings is the son of Scott and Hallie Denise Sillings of Leavenworth.
The bride was given in marriage by her father and mother during the double-ring ceremony officiated by the Rev. Harold Nix.

Jeffries named Gold Star Student

EVANSIVLLE – Davis Jeffries, son of Steve and Cindy Jeffries, was recently named a “2013 Gold Star Student” by the Evansville Courier & Press. 

The annual competition honors Tri-State high school juniors for balancing and excelling in school, employment, extracurricular activities and community endeavors.

Peter wins twice in girls track sectional

LEOPOLD—Cathryn Peter won two events to lead Perry Central to fourth place in its 10-team girls track sectional Tuesday.
Jasper won with 142.5 points, 46.5 ahead of runner-up Forest Park.
Perry Central scored 87 and Tell City was seventh with 40. Cannelton, with just one girl competing, finished 10th with two points.
Peter won the 3200-meter run in 12:05.51 and teamed with Megan Thomas, Grace James and Marie Schwartz to win the 3200 relay in 10:09.91.

Town-hall questioning of commissioners includes cemetery issue

LEOPOLD – A county-commissioners town-hall-style meeting May 2 sent nearly 40 people into the high-school library at Perry Central Community School to ask questions and express concerns. One of those concerns was centered on the Walker Cemetery.

Also present in the audience were County Councilmen Jim Adams and Stan Goffinet, and State Rep. Lloyd Arnold, County Auditor Connie Berger, County Administrator Teresa Kanneberg and Tara Damin, representing the Indiana 15 Regional Planning Commission.

Richardson no-hits Tell City

TELL CITY—Hallie Richardson threw a no-hitter as Pike Central beat Tell City 11-0 in PAC girls softball Wednesday.
Richardson struck out five and walked four as the Marksmen were shut out for the 12th time this season.
“She’s good, but we make everybody look good,” said Tell City Coach John Hayes.
Tell City trailed only 2-0 going into the sixth inning, but the Chargers exploded for nine runs that inning as Tell City went through three pitchers.

Two teams blast Cannelton

CANNELTON—Cannelton gave up 36 runs in baseball losses to Shoals and Hancock County Friday.
“We were not ready to play at all,” said Cannelton Coach Mike Garrett. “It’s not the way you want to end your season before the sectional, that’s for sure.”
Shoals had 11 hits and drew 10 walks in a 14-4 win.
Larry Holman went 2 for 3 with a home run to lead Cannelton. Tristan Simmons added a double.

Knights Tootsie Roll drive

TELL CITY – Tell City Knights of Columbus Council 1172 will accept donations for its Tootsie Roll drive for the mentally challenged citizens of Perry County May 31 and June 1.
Bob Hackle and Terry Schaefer are co-chairing the event and encourage the public to donate at one of four locations: Tell City Wal-Mart, McDonald’s, Noble’s IGA, Fifth Third and Cash Saver. All money raised stays in Perry County.
