TC dad charged with battering 4-month-old

TELL CITY – A Tell City infant continued to battle for her life this week after she was allegedly battered by her father Friday. 

Four-month-old Ashlyn Groves was being treated at Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville, Ky., with a fractured skull, facial bruises and other injuries. The child was flown to Louisville early Saturday from Perry County Memorial Hospital.

TELL CITY – A Tell City infant continued to battle for her life Monday after she was allegedly battered by her father.

Four-month-old Ashlyn Groves was being treated at Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville, Ky., with a fractured skull, facial bruises and other injuries. The child was flown to Louisville early Saturday from Perry County Memorial Hospital.

Police charged her father, 23-year-old Coy W. Smith, of 311 Main St., Apartment 5, with battery resulting in serious bodily injury to a child.

Waupaca Foundry sold to private-equity firm

WAUPACA, Wisc. – ThyssenKrupp AG, a global materials and technology group based in Essen, Germany, announced today the sale of ThyssenKrupp Waupaca Inc., its U.S. foundry business, to an affiliate of KPS Capital Partners, a New York-based private-equity firm. A stock purchase agreement signed by both parties was approved by the ThyssenKrupp supervisory board earlier today.

The purchase price was not disclosed.

16 teachers to retire this month

 TELL CITY – A small crowd gathered in the Tell City Junior-Senior High School auditorium May 8 for the Tell City-Troy Township monthly school board meeting. Most were students who the board recognized for their achievements during the academic year.

High-school Principal Brad Ramsey first introduced the board to academic team members, who placed in the top 10 in the state in Class 3A. The announcement brought a round of applause from everyone present at the meeting.

Lisa Kellems, 51

INDIANAPOLIS – Lisa Gaye Kellems, 51, died Wednesday, May 2, 2012, at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.
She was born Nov. 25, 1960, in Perry County.
She is survived by her husband, Glenn Kellems; a daughter, Tabitha Croddy of Greensburg; four sons, Joshua, Dustin, Chris and Cody, all of Greensburg; eight grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; her mother, Mary Holpp of Tell City and two sisters, Jane Morris of Tell City and Virginia Hagman of Leopold.
Private funeral services were held Thursday, May 3, in Greensburg.

Sharon Poehlein, 73

ARLINGTON, Va. – Sharon Eileen (Wood) Poeh-lein, 73, died of Lou Geh-rig’s disease, Friday, May 4, 2012, at Halquist Memorial Inpatient Center in Arlington.

She was born in Fort Wayne and lived with Gary, her husband of 54 years, in Alexandria, Va.
Sharon and Gary moved to the Washington area from Atlanta in 1996 when Gary accepted a position with the National Science Foundation. She lived in Bethlehem, Penn., prior to moving to Atlanta in 1978.

Cannelton highway to close by Friday

CANNELTON - Indiana 66 in Cannelton, the city’s Seventh Street, will be closed for construction by Friday, Mayor Mary Snyder said Monday.

The News reported May 7 the Indiana Department of Transportation plans closures of two sections of the state highway for 60 days each. During the first phase, drivers traveling east will be directed to take Herzeele Street to Fourth to Taylor, then back to Seventh Street. Detour information for the second phase will be published before it begins.   

Sandra Kitchell, 51

TELL CITY – Sandra L. (Gray) Kitchell, 51, passed away Saturday, May 12, 2012, at University Hospital MPCU in Indianapolis.
She was born in Louisville, Ky., Oct. 2, 1960, to the late Joseph and Nellie (Woodzell) Gray.
Sandy was a graduate of Tell City High School and Hanover College with a bachelor’s degree in communications. She earned a bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy from University of Southern Indiana in 1994.

Donald Brown, 67

TROY – Donald C. Brown, 67, passed away Monday, May 14, 2012, at his home in Troy.

He was born in Grandview June 29, 1944, to the late Basil Brown and Gladys (Rudisill) Morris. Donald was a truck driver and enjoyed being with friends and watching NASCAR. He was married July 9, 1993, to Mary Stillwell.
