Bill Flamion was recently honored with a regional volunteer award by the Hoosier National Forest. Bill took the initiative to assist the Tell City Ranger District maintain the Saddle Lake Campground. He liked to camp there and knew that the district lost the prison crew that used to do all summer maintenance.

The district did not have enough personnel to keep up with all the maintenance throughout the year including mowing, trimming, cleaning out grills and campsites and cleaning the restrooms.

I was reading the March 4 issue of the Perry County News and saw the comment in the story that when Waupaca first came to town, the first 500 employees were easy to find. Then they claimed that they struggled to find people to fill jobs.

I say bull crap! I think there are plenty of people who can do the job and are perfectly willing but Waupaca only wants to hire through temporary services. How can people not be good enough to work a full-time job with full benefits and full pay but are good enough to work the same job under temporary conditions for less pay?

I met Hugo Chávez once. Well, I didn’t as much meet him as quickly shake his hand while he walked down a wide plaza.

It was one of those sudden encounters we sometimes have with celebrities that didn’t mean much to me then but certainly came to mind after the Venezuelan leader’s death last week.
