  • LETTER: Thanks for the invitation, Cannelton

I’d like to thank the people of Cannelton for making the New Albanian Brewing Co. feel so much at home during our afternoon at the Heritage Festival Oct.13.

We had been invited to join a few area wineries this year to offer samples of our beer, and to sell a few pints, too. We met lots of fun people, made some friends and enjoyed the day tremendously.

The organizers had their act together and the venue for the sampling was comfortable and well-planned.

  • COLUMN: Privileged to see city’s heritage

    By TRISTA LUTGRING
    Feature Writer

Being at the young age of 26, as my co-workers like to point out from time to time, there are some events I’ve missed here in Perry County. However, after the past few weeks, I can say I’m very happy and feel privileged to have been here for Cannelton’s 175th anniversary celebration.

  • EDITORIAL: All parties should take part in presidential debates

There are a lot of stories coming out from the presidential debates between incumbent President Barack Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney.

  • LETTER: Send a message to state Supreme Court

Two Indiana Supreme Court justices and four Court of Appeals judges are up for retention on Election Day in November. Voters will decide “yes” or “no” on whether to retain each justice or judge. Justices are elected to a term that could potentially last for 10 years. Once the justice is elected it is virtually impossible to remove them.

  • LETTER: Tell City leaders doing fine beautification job

I want to take this time to let the city leaders of Tell City know what a fine job they are doing to beautify the Fennhaven community.

I was one of the first people to build a home in Fennhaven back in 1954 when Mr. Roy Fenn was selling lots and trying to create a subdivision overlooking the Ohio River.

After my first wife died, I eventually remarried and moved to a different area, but I would always take drives back to Fennhaven to see how things were progressing.

  • LETTER: Cannelton’s anniversary parade a success

We would like to thank everyone who participated and came to see our 175th celebration parade Oct. 7. The following are the winners of the parade contest.

Community division – first place, Margaret and Larry Schank and Patty Seibert in the Sisters of the Swish 1962 remake; second place, Cannelton Elementary School children float; third place, Girl Scout troop float.

  • COLUMN: When good men do nothing

    By JIM ADKINS
    Guest Columnist

“All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.” (Edmund Burke)

Much of what is wrong with our nation today can be explained by Edmund Burke’s observation. There are many good men (and women) in America but are they willing to stand up and fight for their beliefs? Sadly, too often, the answer is no.

  • COLUMN: Congress cedes power

    By LEE HAMILTON
    Center for Congress

There is a widespread sense, both in Washington and around the country, that Congress has just ended one of the most listless and unproductive sessions in memory. When its members bolted town to go home and campaign, they left a long list of big issues unaddressed, including immigration reform, “the fiscal cliff,” climate change, entitlement reform and cyber-security.
