The start of a new year brings plenty of opportunities to get involved in our community, from volunteering your time toward a cause you find important to running for office. Even if your original New Year’s resolutions have fallen by the wayside, there’s time to become and stay involved. You’ll be happier and so will others in our community who need the help.

  • Silvesternacht certainly was cold but warm in community spirit

On behalf of the members of the Perry County Quality of Life Committee, we would like to extend our sincere gratitude for all those who assisted in planning and hosting the sixth annual Silvesternacht celebration on New Year’s Eve.

It would not be possible without the enthusiastic collaboration between the city of Tell City, local businesses and organizations and Tell City Troy Township School Corp.

  • Tell City Kiwanis Club says ‘thank you’

The Tell City Kiwanis Club would like to thank the many generous individual donors who helped make the Kiwanis Christmas Basket Program possible this year.

Thank you to thePerry County News for Jan. 1 editorial, “Department of Child Services claims demand attention.”  I hope it helps to educate the public about this serious problem in Indiana and especially in the five counties that compose Indiana House District 74 (Crawford, Dubois, Orange, Perry and Spencer).

  • Succulents for successful indoor blooms

Plant collectors have long appreciated orchids and African violets for their winter bloom cycle. I have amassed a collection of both and they help me get through the winter with their colorful interest. But violets and orchids are not the only classes of plants that can deliver in the winter; think succulents.

  • Thank you, Tell City police officers

A few weeks ago we asked the public for nominations for Perry County’s person of the year for 2017. We were seeking an individual who made a real difference in improving life in a positive way in our community. We received a number of suggestions, many pointing to the work of the Tell City Police Department. We couldn’t agree more. And we are reminded of a story we ran about a year ago in which Tell City was listed as the second safest small community in the state and one of the 250 safest in the nation.

  • The beauty of winter

As a kid, I didn’t mind winter. Even a modest snowfall usually meant no school for the day, sledding, visiting neighborhood friends and lots of afternoon TV. Now that I’m middle-aged, winter tugs at me and asks me to slow down and so it seems I’m more reflective about winter and its place among the four seasons.

  • The importance of words

We must never let words control our thoughts; we must control them. Incorrect usage of words and punctuation can produce confusion, miscomprehension and improper conclusions in the mind of the reader.

In the past the incorrect usage of words and punctuation have produced disastrous consequences.

V.I. Lenin misplaced a simple comma while writing a directive which resulted in the mass murder of thousands.
