  • LETTER: Family’s holiday was ruined by thieves

    My family moved to Tell City from upstate New York in July and we all fell in love with the city. My children are thriving, my wife and I have made friends and we were really beginning to think this was the place to put down roots.  

    Then we went to New York for the holidays to visit family.

    Our house was broken into, and our TV, computer, video games and other items were stolen. No one was home and no one was hurt – thank goodness – but my family has never experienced anything like this before, and we are all shaken.

  • LETTER: A generous county made benefit a success

    The Zach Taylor Benefit was a huge success and we would like to thank the following people and organizations: Anderson Township, Central Perry and Tell City fire department members and their wives; Perry County Rescue Squad members and wives and the Fraternal Order of Police members and wives.

    To all of the businesses and individuals in Perry, Spencer and Dubois counties who donated items for the auction, thank you. There are so many that it would take a whole page to list you all individually. Your gracious donations do not go unnoticed.

    Last week started in unique fashion as the House accepted the “Suits and Sneakers” challenge against cancer. Legislators and staff were asked to wear sneakers to show support for the Suits and Sneakers challenge, a cause that promotes awareness of living a healthy lifestyle.

    We live in a caring community. That was evident Jan. 26 as a I left the Perry County 4-H fairgrounds carrying a pair of to-go chicken dinners. That day’s benefit for Zach Taylor drew hundreds of people to raise money for a young man and volunteer firefighter who is battling cancer.

  • EDITORIAL: A cardinal pays for his sins

    A cardinal was relieved of his public duties last week in another sign the American Catholic Church is more willing to confront decades of abuse of children by priests and the sins of those who tried to hide the truth and protected pedophiles.

    In a never-before-seen move, Los Angeles Archbishop Jose Gomez relieved his predecessor, Cardinal Roger M. Mahony, of all public duties over his failure to handle reports of clergy sex abuse.

    Mahoney served as Los Angeles archbishop from 1985 until his retirement in 2011.

  • LETTER: The gun-control hypocrisy of fat cats

    Ok, Chris Christie, I’ll see your reprehensible and raise you two contemptible.

    What is this all about? The National Rifle Association ran a video advertisement pointing out the hypocrisy of President Obama and many politicians and media celebrities sending their children to schools protected by armed guards, while at the same time criticizing and ridiculing the NRA for recommending that all schools have armed guards.

  • LETTER: Community continues its long support of Tell City Kiwanis’ food-basket program

    The Tell City Kiwanis Club would like to thank the many donors to the Kiwanis Christmas Basket Program this year. Your donations, totaling $15,736, helped make Christmas brighter for hundreds of families.

    Tell City Kiwanians provided 319 food baskets to families in Tell City, Cannelton, Troy and some rural areas while our partners at Perry Central Outreach provided 52 baskets at Perry Central with help from Tell City Kiwanis.
