I’ve talked to the county attorney twice and he sent an e-mail to the county garage about my request for speed bumps in front of our home on Lorainne Road. We live on a one-lane, crooked, dead-end road, where the speed limit was 30 miles per hour.

When I talked to county garage employee Steve Howell, he informed me they couldn’t do speed bumps because it may tear up someone’s car. I voiced my concerns of wrecks and excessive speed and that we had small kids in the area and his answer was, “We better keep our kids out of the road.”

For kids who couldn’t yet spell tradition, we considered it a holy rite that had to be upheld at all costs. It was quite literally, a movable feast — it happened on our school bus every spring — auspiciously enough, on the ride home of the last day of school.

Looking back, it was the mother of all battles, water battles that is. It was sixth grader vs. sophomore, neighbor against neighbor and brother battling brother.
