  • Safe indoor plant pest controls

Have you noticed a sticky substance on the floor beneath your ficus or philodendron?  Are there little scabs on the underside of the leaves of your orchid? Maybe you have noticed your plants just look a little lack luster.

  • Memories of Dr. Gene Ress

    By Chuck Poehlein

“Pillar of the Community” does not say enough about a man who devoted his entire life to helping others.

You have to have had first-hand experience with the man to see his compassion, his understanding, the wisdom and insight that come only from long experience and to see his dedication tc community.

  • Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus

Editor’s note: In the months before the Christmas of 1897, an 8-year-old girl named Virginia O’Hanlon wrote a letter to the New York Sun, asking if there really was a Santa Claus. Edward P. Mitchell gave the assignment to Francis P. Church, whose reply to Virginia appeared in the Sept. 21, 1897, edition of the Sun.

Virginia’s letter and Church’s reply, as it appeared in the Sun, are reprinted below. Virginia O’Hanlon Douglas died May 13, 1971.

  • Make Silvesternacht part of your New Year’s tradition

    Vince Luecke

All of us have traditions we follow throughout the year and our celebration of the last day of each year is one of them. New Year’s Eve traditions vary by individual and family.

It’s a night out with family and friends for some. For others, it’s a nice dinner and a night at home playing cards or watching the ball drop far away in Times Square. Some folks don’t take notice and mark the new year fast asleep.

  • Help wish Randy Davis a happy retirement

After 45 years behind the wheel of that white Conner Floor Covering van, Randy Davis is getting off his knees and packing up his carpet stretcher for the last time! As of Dec. 22, Randy is officially retiring and taking some well-earned time off.

In the spring of 1971, my dad told Randy he could probably use some extra temporary help in his construction business that summer. That temporary help lasted until the next year when dad started selling floor coverings also, and Randy began his lifelong career installing them.

  • Local residents show community spirit

On behalf of the Rome Cemetery Association, we wish to thank William J. Coomer and his wife, Carolyn L. Coomer, for their second very generous gift of a large parcel of land to expand the already full Lamb/Rowe local landmark cemetery.

These rural, out-of-the-way cemeteries are often overlooked and almost forgotten.

But for the families whose descendants go back centuries and wish to continue their heritage in Perry County, it is important they have the opportunity to do so.

  • ‘The Last Jedi’ didn’t ruin my childhood; it was just boring

    Eric Harris

    Movie Critic

This is a review I never thought I would write. I watched a “Star Wars” movie, and I did not love it. In fact, I barely even liked “The Last Jedi.” Honestly, I have to keep telling myself I liked it.

My hope is that future viewings will win me over and/or elements of “Episode IX” will complement themes and moments set up in this film. Before I continue, I cannot stress enough how much I wanted to like this movie. I have never felt this conflicted after watching a movie.

  • Asian lady beetles on the move

Some years are worse than others: I remember years when it was like a siege of lady beetles, other years a few popped up here or there. Usually they sneak their way into our homes as a noticeable chill settles in. On sunny days, they cling to the screen door on the south side of where I write but I need not worry about them as they sun themselves. The ones that make it inside, however, meet my vacuum cleaner!
