Today's Opinions

  • Dear Santa, all I want is ...

Santa, I've run into you several times this season, during parades, in stores and other pre-holiday gatherings with adults and kids. We've chatted briefly but I've never made the time to tell you my Christmas wishes. Since you subscribe to the paper, although it gets to you a few days late up at the North Pole, I'm sharing my requests at this late hour.

Hopefully, you get to read this before that sleigh is fully loaded. I know what a pain repacking is.

  • 'Invictus' confusing, but uplifting film

"Invictus," Clint Eastwood's latest directorial effort, is a well made inspirational film with an important message, but it falls short of greatness.

  • Listening sessions help Ellspermann outline priorities for SW Indiana

As candidate for Indiana House District 74, I have spent the last several weeks conducting listening sessions in Chrisney, Boonville and Tell City. The purpose for the sessions was to learn and hear firsthand what is important to the citizens of Perry, Spencer and Warrick counties. The comments shared were both heartwarming and heart-wrenching.

  • Bishop Paul D. Etienne, Ad multos annos!

We're always pleased when Perry Countians do well, even when those successes take them far from home.

News in October that the Rev. Paul Etienne had been chosen by Pope Benedict XVI to become the eighth bishop of Cheyenne, Wyoming, left Perry Countians of all faiths justly proud of their native son.

Here is someone reared in our community and educated in our schools, carrying our values, chosen to shepherd thousands of souls.

  • Note to self: Think before talking

My face reddens easily, but never more quickly than when I say something I shouldn't. I can take back what I write, at least before the paper goes to print, but words that leave my mouth can't be retracted.

  • For cities, county, a lot rides on Census 2010

In just a few months Census 2010 will become a reality, with Perry County residents receiving their census forms in the mail. We can't stress how important it is for all of us to participate and complete the simple 10-question form.

Tell City has formed a Complete Count Committee, led by Louie and Marcie Heitkemper with representatives from schools, community groups, churches and media. Its chief goal is to educate citizens about how important the census is. That group's message is equally important to all county residents.

  • Holiday traditions good and bad

The holiday season isn't just about eating, but meals seem to be an important part of year-end celebrations for many of us. They certainly are for me.

One of my holiday goals has been finding more time to spend with family, friends and others in the community. With one holiday down and two to go, my record is mixed, but I'm still determined to spend more time enjoying others' company and less time working.

  • Recovery home makes sense

I am perplexed. I am confused. I am disappointed. And more importantly, I am ashamed. Why? Because of the recent negative debate and denial of the proposed halfway house on Girl Scout Road.
