  • LETTER: Smoke Free Perry County Coalition asks pregnant smokers to quit on Mother’s Day

Quitting smoking is one of the best things a pregnant woman can do to protect her own health and the health of her baby. On this Mother’s Day, members of the Smoke Free Perry County Coalition encourage smokers to call the Indiana Tobacco Quitline at (800) QUIT-NOW. The Indiana Tobacco Quitline has expanded its services to better reach pregnant women, increasing the number of calls to pregnant women from trained quit coaches from four to 10.

Women who smoke can greatly benefit from the free counseling and support services provided by the Indiana Tobacco Quitline.

  • LETTER: Federal employees better our everyday lives

Across the country and in communities like Perry County, government employees protect and serve our nation. To honor these workers and their service, May 5-11 has been designated as Public Service Recognition Week.

  • LETTER: Cannelton principal offers big thank you

Cannelton elementary faculty, staff and students would like to publicly thank all of the dedicated volunteers who assist our school in many ways.

  • LETTER: Schools take active role in dating safety

Thank you for publishing Bill Stanczykiewicz’s column regarding teen dating violence April 4.

As a follow up, we wanted to ensure our local community is aware that all of the area schools have partnered with Crisis Connection Inc. on providing primary prevention education in support of Indiana’s Heather’s Law. This includes curriculum in the high-school classes called ‘Safe Dates’ and ‘Expect Respect’ at the junior-high level.

  • LETTER: Keep hunting ethical

Representatives of the undersigned sporting and conservation organizations thank Indiana Senate President Pro Tempore David Long for his recent public stand decrying canned hunting.

His comments on shooting domestic deer in enclosures expose the unethical practices that occur behind hunting-preserve fences. Long’s comments couldn’t have come at a better time.

  • LETTER Common core: It’s a simple education choice

Sometimes choices aren’t clear-cut. Who hasn’t gone through the frustrating experience of choosing between “A” or “B” or “1” or “2” at the optometrist’s office.

But the selection that needs to be made with the Common Core academic standards is the exact opposite: It’s simple and obvious. Forget, for a minute, about all the facts and myths associated with the program. Legislators who are debating whether to halt Common Core have this choice:

  • LETTER: Life is simpler without Internet, e-mail

You recently mentioned my name in the March 28 paper as one of the Perry County people who has money the attorney general wishes to return.

I do not have direct access to the Internet for reasons I think are good. I follow the advice of a wise man from one of those oriental countries.

He sat on an elevated platform in a village where the people could ask questions.

His head was bald, he had no teeth and a large belly – signifying the ultimate happiness – and no sandals on his feet.
