Editor’s note: Mary Sommer, who is the News’ Gerald correspondent, provided this poem to mark Sunday’s observance of Mother’s Day. The poem was written in 1932 by her mother, Allie Glodeane Thomas.
She was born in Hancock County, Ky., in 1909, and started writing poetry while she was still in school. When she was 14 years old, her family moved to southern Indiana. She married there, and with her husband, Urban, worked and raised five sons and a daughter. Thomas died in 2004.
