  • LETTER: State should share surplus with all Hoosiers

    This letter is being written to the residents of southern Indiana. My name is James Carter and I need your help to make the citizens of our counties aware of a problem that can be avoided.

    The state has a $2 billion surplus that will most likely only benefit a few counties in northern Indiana if certain powers get their way.

    Many of our counties’ infrastructures are wearing out fast, and will continue to unless we band together as a bloc and demand a proper share of the surplus that we helped create.

  • LETTER: Nation’s health-care crisis predates Obama

    I’d like to address a couple of points in Cheryl Freeman’s letter in The Perry County News of Sept. 3. The first is her talking about President Obama robbing Medicare of $716 billion.

    The figure in question is a case of getting rid of fraud, eliminating overcharges by hospitals and excess premiums charged by insurance companies under Medicare Advantage, not exactly stealing in the strictest sense.

  • LETTER: Woman appreciates support after accident

    I wanted to send a letter to the News because after I was in a very tragic accident, many groups worked very diligently during a time that was difficult for all concerned.

    I want to thank the Perry County Rescue Squad, Perry County Ambulance Service and the sheriff’s department and other local emergency and law-enforcement units and the public who were present and offered assistance after my Aug. 9 accident.

  • LETTER: Obama robs $716 billion from Medicare

    Besides using $716 billion from Medicare, the Obamacare law adds 21 new taxes to the American taxpayer. Seven of these new taxes will apply to taxpayers in the middle class. That means you and me. The new health-care law raises taxes on working families by $502 billion.

    On Jan. 1 if you make more than $200,000 and you sell your house, you will have to pay sales taxes of 3.8 percent; not the buyer but the seller pays. The individual mandate tax will cost between $685 and $4,700 depending on your income.

  • LETTER: Retailers: Keep your cash registers honest

    From what I have been hearing, people in this area are sick and tired as I am going to the supermarkets in and around Tell City and buying items that are on sale, but when they get to the cash register, they are charged the full prices.

    Seems they always have an excuse but I think it is on purpose because it has happened to me three times in the past two weeks.

    This tells me there are hundreds of other people this is happening to. Some people are o fed up they are going out of town to do shopping.

  • Three back-to-school success stories

    The Cannelton, Perry Central and Tell City-Troy Township schools would like to thank all the individuals, organizations and businesses that contributed to the success of this year’s back-to- school cookouts.

    The turnouts were great with thousands of students and parents who enjoyed getting together with their friends, teachers and other Perry County families to kick off the new school year during these annual fun events.

    The students and their families visiting at the three school sites appreciated the free school supplies and food.

  • Some people don’t respect their neighbors

    Why can’t something be done about eyesores on streets where you look out your living room window, all you see is a huge mobile home on wheels or a sailboat? I realize the streets are public, but why can’t there be a way to have those parked where they are not the view you see out your front window? Could there not be a way to get these people to be good neighbors and have those large items parked on side streets where they live, so those who pay taxes on a home can have a view when looking out their window? Can’t people in Tell City consider their neighbors?
