  • COLUMN: Why I chose to live in Tell City

    By KIP KRIZMAN, Guest Columnist

Why Tell City? The question seems easy enough to answer. My wife, Dr. Ana Lagunzad-Krizman and I could offer several generic aswers such as we were recruited by Perry County Memorial Hospital or we were looking for a change of pace from Cleveland, Ohio.

However, none of these answers would begin to touch the core reasons as to why we stayed in Tell City. Perhaps the question should be: Why not Tell City?

    By VINCE LUECKE, Editor

I took part in an exercise last fall sponsored by the Perry County Local Emergency Planning Committee, a behind-the-scenes group that gathers information on potentially hazardous chemicals in the county. The group also prepares response plans to spills, explosions and other emergencies.

  • COLUMN: Think drug-testing policy through

    By JIM ALEXANDER, Guest Columnist

I am writing in response to the article (“School officials eye drug-testing program,” Dec. 20 issue) announcing that the school board may be considering a program to conduct drug testing on students who wish to drive to school or participate in extracurricular activities.

The opinions expressed here are my own, and not necessarily those of Abbott Laboratories, or any other company, group or individual.

  • COLUMN: Simple goals for 2011

    By VINCE LUECKE, Editor

A new year has arrived and while 2011 is just days old, many of us are already struggling with what resolutions are worth keeping and which ones aren’t perhaps your resolutions are holding firm or maybe they have fallen apart already. A couple of mine certainly have.

Here are a few goals I have for the new year. I certainly don’t hold them out as examples for everyone but, hey, if they offer a bit of inspiration, you’re welcome to them. Perhaps they will generate goals of your own.

    ERIC HARRIS, Film Review

Eric Harris, who reviews films for The News, ranks last year’s offerings of dramas, comedies and science-fiction offerings. He will be back with occasional reviews in 2011.

    1. “Black Swan” – I loved nearly every aspect of this film. Darren Aronofsky has made a disturbing classic featuring the best female lead performance of the year from Natalie Portman.

  • COLUMN: Small steps can lead to health and wealth in 2011

    BRENDA HAGEDORN, Purdue Extension

Just in time to rescue failed New Year’s resolutions to improve health and personal finances, the cooperative extension system is launching an online Small Steps to Health and Wealth Challenge called Winter 2011 SSHW Challenge.

  • Column: High hopes for the new year

    By VINCE LUECKE, Editor

Though these words take shape on the Thursday before New Year’s, I find myself with feelings of anticipation and even tinges of excitement as 2011 nears.

I’m reminded of how many things I’ve yet to do before the new year chimes in. I have a to-do list not quite as long as the one Santa tended to, but daunting nonetheless. I want to clear my desk of paper, put files strewn about for weeks in their proper places and dust shelves. I want to enter the new year at least halfway organized.

  • Indiana’s structural budget deficit

    LARRY DeBOER
    GUEST COLUMNIST

Does Indiana have a structural budget deficit? In one sense, Indiana doesn’t have a deficit at all. We interpret Article 10, Section 5 of our state constitution to mean that the state must have a balanced budget. State balances must be positive at the end of each fiscal year. This requirement is always met, one way or another.
