My name is Nikki Hawkins and I am a new member of the Red Cross team. I’m so excited to be a part of such an wonderful organization. Llynn Enmen, who has been a fantastic representative of the Red Cross for years, and I have had multiple discussions over the disaster preparedness in Perry County and we have decided that the best thing to do is to bring everyone together to have a discussion about where we want to go and how we are going to get there.

  • COLUMN: Things we carry with us

    By VINCE LUECKE

It’s been a long time since I peeked in a woman’s purse though I suspect women carry a plethora of things in their handbags. It’s the same with men’s wallets. In fact we all carry things with us, in our purses, wallets, glove boxes – who keeps gloves in glove boxes any more? – pants pockets and backpacks.

  • COLUMN: Battling a smelly problem

    By VINCE LUECKE, Editor

I live in the country so skunks aren’t a big problem for me. I see them as roadkill or sometimes catch their unmistakable odor on my hill in New Boston or on the farm.

Several Tell City residents, however, have had real problems with skunks recently, part of an apparent population boom in the mammals.

  • COLUMN: Help shape our city’s future

By BARBARA EWING, Mayor of Tell City

Greetings from the Tell City mayor’s office. Coach Paul Bryant once said, “No coach has ever won a game by what he knows, it’s what his players know that counts.”

Within our community, I believe, as mayor, we have the people, the skills, the resources and the materials to create a positive change in Tell City! It is for this reason that Tell City is reaching out to its citizens and all citizens of Perry County for help in developing a comprehensive plan for the Tell City community.

  • COLUMN: And the surveys say ...

    By VINCE LUECKE, Editor

Surveys conducted as part of Perry County’s Hometown Competitiveness Program turned up some interesting data about the challenges facing our community – as well as many of its strengths. A public presentation of findings by five committees was conducted Feb. 21 and we’ll share the details of the findings in a story soon.

  • COLUMN: Add your voice to the opinion page

    By VINCE LUECKE, Editor

Front pages may serve as the pulse of community newspapers, but the opinion page, the one you’ve turned to now, is certainly its voice.

It’s on this page our staff shares its thoughts through editorials and columns. I’ve long leveraged this page to talk about a variety of things, from news and insights to my own opinions that readers have told me for nearly a decade and a half strike them as serious, entertaining, insightful and occasionally inspiring and sometimes creating anger and consternation.

  • COLUMN: Sunday’s Academy Awards might bring surprises

    By ERIC HARRIS, Film Reviewer

The Academy Awards are this Sunday so it’s time for me to weigh in once again with my thoughts, predictions and personal picks for the ceremony.

In general, I’m not too upset with the nominees this year. Sure, there are plenty of snubs I could (and will) comment on, but the Academy has become so predictable that it’s hard to even get worked up about the movies and actors that didn’t make the cut.
